About Girls Rock! Aotearoa

Girls Rock! Aotearoa is a network of holiday programmes for young women, trans and gender non-conforming youth where music is the medium to build confidence, empowerment and foster social change. The first programme took place in January 2018 in Tamaki Makaurau; 2019 has seen a second in Auckland and expansion to Wellington with Girls Rock! Poneke.

Participants form bands, learn instruments and write an original song that’s performed at a concert at the end of camp. Throughout the week campers also participate in workshops on songwriting, feminism and more.

The kaupapa of Girls Rock! Aotearoa is to create the world we want to live in - a more equal and inspiring place. Currently women are underrepresented in the New Zealand music industry. They make up only 23.8 per cent of songwriters who belong to APRA-AMCOS' in New Zealand and only 10 percent of the total royalties paid to writers. GR!A aims to address this gender imbalance in the music industry (and wider society) by empowering and supporting young women, trans and gender non-conforming youth by giving them practical skills, role models and a safe supportive space.
