Bedroom Musician and Singer-songwriter James Lindsay is gearing up to release his debut EP I Made This In My Bedroom.
James spent his high-school years busking on the streets of his hometown Christchurch as a part time job, it was these early experiences with performing for others that sparked James’s passion to pursue music as more than just a hobby. This passion proved impossible to ignore and after high-school he moved to Wellington to study and pursue music. James describes his music as ‘indie pop', that combines personal lyrics with pop sensibilities and hook driven verses and chorus’s.
Something that sets James apart from his peers while live on stage is his use of Ableton software and a loop-station to perform his tracks solo, a style of performance made popular by artists such as FKJ and Ed Sheeran.
I Made This In My Bedroom is a three track E.P, and is bedroom musician James Lindsay’s first foray into releasing music.
Track 1 Friends (Here I Go Again)
Friends is the first track on the EP, chosen for its lighthearted and upbeat tone. The song is a bittersweet story about being in love with someone, and not being sure if they know you exist.
“The song was actually written while I was having writers block for the two other songs on the EP, I had been in in the studio all day trying to come up with the second verse of ‘I don’t wanna be scared’ and I got distracted and just wrote Friends, It’s probably the easiest song I’ve written and I had fun with it. Usually I stress over whether my lyrics are too simple but with this one I decided to just embrace it and write the first thing that came to my head for every line.”
Track 2 I Don’t Wanna To Be Scared
I Don’t Wanna Be Scared is a song about holding out for a change. Written while going through a period of miscommunication in his relationship James describes it as a sad love song.
“The song actually started out as a Tennessee Whisky cover, when I was first playing the song at home just messing with the chords, I was singing those lyrics over it. Then later on I was trying to write a different song and I liked the idea of the song but it just wasn’t working out until I accidentally brought up the beat I had made for the cover and it all just seemed to fit in.”
Track 3 Not The Man
Not The Man is a melancholy reflection of James’s life as he had just moved away from home. It is the first song that was written for the EP, and although it came from a place of sadness, self-doubt and existentialism, the chorus signals a ‘turn’ in James’ life as he comes to terms with what is going on around him and within him.
“Not The Man is easily the hardest song I’ve written, I was going through a really rough time personally and in my relationship and was having a pretty strong existential crisis. I had moved to Wellington to pursue music as-well as study at university and for the first year all I did towards that was show up for lectures, most of the time not even managing that. I didn’t realise at the time why I was feeling low and blamed it on many different things in my life like my relationship, university and myself, which caused me to lose a lot of the self esteem. I didn’t realise that the real reason for my feelings was the loss of drive and passion for creating music. I realised this at 2:00am one morning, jumped in my car, drove to the top of the hill and wrote the first verse and chorus right there.”
