Midem Successes So Far

29 January 2006 - 0 Comments

New Zealand companies look set to have one of their most successful years ever at MIDEM. Over 9300 international music industry delegates are present at the French trade show, including independent and major record companies, music publishers, online & traditional distributors, live music professionals, A&R executives, agents, producers, promoters, import/exporters, manufacturers, service companies, retailers, attorneys and rights organisations.

Generally speaking, most of the achievements that come from the NZ presence at MIDEM occur in the months after the event – this year it’s very quick:

Independent Music NZ (IMNZ) has been formally ratified as a member of WWIN – the World Wide Independent Music Network. This is made up of 27 member countries, with Board members including the heads of the Tommy Boy, Beggars Group, Cooking Vinyl, and K7 labels. IMNZ has also been invited to take part in a AIM (Association of Independent Music in UK) Trade Mission that is to visit the main centres of Australia next month

Jayrem has secured licenses for at least four of their New Zealand titles into European territories, most with advances.

Heart Music has had their videos picked up for airplay on USA cable music television.

Chris Chetland, representing the producers from Handmade/Kog, has been offered over a half a dozen remixes for various international labels.

Following on from their recent deal with SonyBMG for Loop North America, Loop Recordings have negotiated a deal to work directly with Apple iTunes USA for Europe, Australia, America, Japan, Canada. They are the first NZ label to have a direct presence and the deal enables them to work as an aggregator for other labels.

Elite has generated a lot of interest with Canadian companies for both The Dukes and the forthcoming album by Warren Love, with both label and publishing companies keen to work with those acts.

With the attendees looking to build on the relationships made at MIDEM so far, and plenty of meetings still to come, the NZMIC is looking forward to hearing many more positive results over the coming months.
