Up-and-coming New Zealand singer and songwriter Abby Wolfe has released her new single Free Falling - a brave and bold song, which is all about jumping into acceptance and love.
Honesty and a desire to speak her truth lies at the heart of Abby’s songs and Free Falling is no exception. It was written by Abby alongside Djeisan Suskov, Evan Sinton AKA Maala, and US artist and songwriter Maize Olinger, at this year’s APRA Songhubs - an annual songwriting camp, which sees some of New Zealand’s best talent paired with international producers and writers.
The song was produced by Djeisan Suskov (Benee, Paige) and Roundhead’s award-winning Simon Gooding (Pink, Teeks).
“When I wrote Free Falling it basically came down to me confronting my fears about being gay in the music industry,” explains Abby. “I had it in my head that I couldn’t be both. I thought I had to suppress one half of myself so that my career could flourish.” Free Falling stays very much in the catchy pop-influenced lane of Abby’s previous singles Breakdown, Lonely In Company, Win You Over and Change My Mind. Yet it also demonstrates growth and development in Abby’s songwriting craft.
Hailing from Dunedin, Abby found herself in Auckland in early 2017 navigating the ups and downs of being a self-managed, independent artist. It wasn’t long before she’d found herself in the studio with leading pop producers Josh Fountain (Benee, Theia,Maala, Matthew Young) and Djeisan Suskov.
Abby’s previous singles and have amassed more than 500k plays on Spotify, while receiving international blog attention and radio support. She also featured on the 2018 song Surrenderwith Melbourne-based dance duo Chores, performing live with them at some of New Zealand’s biggest festivals. Free Falling marks the next step in Abby’s journey and makes way for an exciting year of new releases ahead in 2020. To celebrate the song’s release, she will be travelling from Auckland to Dunedin performing the song live on regional radio.
Abby will also open for Australian indie rockers, Great Gable, when they perform in Auckland on Thursday November 7 (TICKETS) and Tauranga on Friday November 8 (TICKETS).
