The video, which premiered with Radio New Zealand this morning, is directed by the award-winning Shae Sterling and mitigates glacial melt with the beauty of Polynesia. The idea came from Seth, who wanted something natural and symbolic of global warming in the Pacific Islands: “Through our Pacific origins, we are custodians of the environment. In the visual, we each express this role as an image of the land and sea.”
The song delivers a powerful message, brilliantly realised with compelling lyrics, crisp R&B beats immersed with Polynesian-instrumentation and a chorus, which simply soars with the sublime vocals of Seth and one of Aotearoa’s most well-known artists, Stan Walker.
Self-produced by Seth, Cool Down features a number of instruments, which are unique to the Pacific, including Pahu (made of native wood and shark skin) which gives a low pulse like a heartbeat; Pate and Rākau, which offer higher tones and can be heard as textured drum lines and the Hue Puruwai, which forms a shaker pattern that sounds like flowing water.
