Music News - Groovefest Returns To Canterbury

Groovefest Returns To Canterbury

21 January 2020 - 0 Comments

Friday and Saturday, April 3rd and 4th, 2020 — Christchurch, NZ — Tombstone Entertainment, CANNA, Waghorn Builders and Slick Burgers have teamed up for the 8th annual Groovefest. The two night, all-inclusive music festival takes place at Club Tavern in Christchurch, New Zealand. Located in the Christchurch CBD — Groovefest is the perfect event for music aficionados who prefer to “experience” live music and interact with artists among a like-minded community.

Prizes, giveaways, merch, drinks specials and food are included and attendees are welcome to participate in all activities.

The principle sponsor CANNA are more and more enthusiastic about supporting NZ music each year. This year at Groovefest 8, CANNA will be holding a giveaway for a Fender Stratocaster.

“In an effort to even further build community and provide you with an amazing musical experience, we are excited to launch Groovefest 8!” — The Groovefest Team.

The 2020 lineup features a diverse range of acts, spanning genres such as heavy, stoner and power rock, trap metal, dub, roots, funk, sonic punk, psychedelic indie rock and much more. Something for everyone!

Returning artists include crowd favourites Stonehurst, a local and national favourite whose ‘Sabbath-esque heavy power rock’ riffs have travelled to ears all over NZ since 2007. With their new tracks and fresh line-up, this is set to be the best performance any Groovefest event has seen yet!

Also back for a second year is the Christchurch based live-trio Scrooge, whose fusion of bass-heavy dub, funk and rock kept the crowd dancing like crazy at last year’s fest.

There are a bunch of GF newcomers included in the 2020 lineup as well. Auckland based Makeshift Parachutes will be bringing their seductively compelling mix of psychedelic and indie rock, blending ethereal vocals and atmospheric guitars to our eager minds for the first time.

Christchurch’s own Dusty Hustle will be bringing back their 6-piece roots/dub/reggae/rock act this year. With reggae roots style guitar, deep bass grooves over tight drum breaks and rhythms, layered with keys/synths, trumpet, sax, trombone and harmonious vocals, this band really knows how to bring the party!

Reggae fusion extraordinaries Horizone mixes a funky, and soulful dubby clash of genres culminating in a crisp tune to the earlobe. Influences of Sticky Fingers, The Black Seeds, Kora, Fat Freddy's Drop, Sola Rosa, The Black Keys, Gorillaz, ED, Kendrick, Ocean Alley, Dope Lemon and Sublime all combine to make something refreshing and unexpectedly timeless.

Sloth Moth, a new to Christchurch collaboration between Michael Koefman (of Order of Diptera, Amidst Haze) and Victor Thompson (of Snail Rider)., are a new sophisticated take on a Katatonia/Karnivool-esque inspired experimental and melodic 'Sloth Rock'

High-energy live performers Streakers draw influences from bands like Queens of the Stone Age, Soundgarden, Kyuss, Smashing Pumpkins, Violent Soho (among many others). You will be pleasantly surpised with the unique captivating sound of this 3 piece Alt-rock band.

Devade, presented by the trap metal team, Gareth Fleck and Daniel McHutchison, is best known for their explosive performance and emo lyrics, enabling the crowd to head bang to their hearts content, while finishing with wanting to cry from emotional instability.

Among many great acts in this line up, one band we are particularly proud to present, is Troika. Christchurch's most epic atmospheric-experimental rock trio are hard at work on their fourth album and have kindly agreed to grace us with their presence for this years Groovefest. From gentle and atmospheric passages to dynamic, intense walls of distortion and feedback, Troika will ascend you through Floyd-esque style soundscapes!

Christchurch doomers Snail Rider may be relatively new to the scene, but with Liam Stevens’ (of Tainted) guitar tone and Shauna's devastatingly heavy-ass bass lines, their music will create the soundtrack of your impending doom. Mounted upon gastropod steeds of war, Snail Rider is sonic dread.
