Translating the enchanting words of Katherine Mansfield into music, a line-up of impressive contemporary Kiwi performers has assembled for Mansfield, a concept album set for release on February 20. Celebrating the upcoming release, Taite and Silver Scroll award-winning Lawrence Arabia performs the second single from the album, Malade, which is available for streaming from today.
Singer and songwriter James Milne has become a powerhouse in New Zealand music since the release of his first album in 2006, having since won both the high coveted Silver Scroll and Taite Music Prize. His track, inspired by Mansfield’s wry poem about strangers hearing each other's tubercular cough through a shared hotel wall, offers up a heavy groovy bassline that is offset by his multi-layered vocal and twangy electric guitar.
Lawrence Arabia is one of a dozen Kiwi musicians handpicked by singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Charlotte Yates for the project. Gathering an exciting and varied selection of top contemporary performers to step outside of their usual oeuvre for the album, the resulting 12 songs are representative of the melodic quality woven throughout Katherine Mansfield’s work. The project marks the fourth time Yates has created a collaborative album to pay tribute to and elevate the work of other Kiwis, with previous albums that celebrate the work of James K. Baxter, Hone Tuwhare, and Witi Ihimaera.
