Hamish Kilgour, best known as a founding member of Dunedin indie rock band The Clean, announces a short series of shows around the North Island with Taranaki singer-songwriter Emily Riordan.
Kilgour and Riordan met in November last year, when Emily Riordan joined the bill as support for several stops on the Hamish Kilgour Trio’s national tour.
Though Riordan admits she “had no idea who Hamish was” and “took a bit of convincing”, the shows she played with the group left an impression. “There were a few very crazy, very rock-and roll nights,” she says, “and I remember thinking as it unfolded that I was so glad I got to be there.”
Kilgour fondly recalls his introduction to Riordan at the first show they played together at the Jam Factory in Tauranga. During a brief delay to the start of her duo set with Bittercup (Callum Wagstaff), “Emily breaks into an Irish folk song a capella and immediately takes the whole room’s breath away,” he recounts. “So what a start!”
Hamish Kilgour’s most recent release, 2018’s LP Finklestein, was born of a story Kilgour crafted for his young son. Emily Riordan’s debut EP Waves, a trip-hop/trap collaboration with Wellington producer Shxshi, was released in 2019.
With their 'Something Alt, Something New' tour, Kilgour and Riordan hope to bring together an “old” sound of New Zealand and a new, emerging sound from the next generation, who Kilgour says “continue to amaze me with their talent and youthful smarts”.
