Officially open for business in its new location, SOLE Music Academy is putting Christchurch on the map with a modern approach to the music industry that’s already attracting global interest. SOLE became the first tenant to move into the restored and renovated Woods Mill Building on February 10, a project that aims to revitalise this historic part of Addington.
The academy is the vision of international platinum recording artist Sacha Vee, who for the past two years, has specialised in vocal and songwriting sessions, production skills and artist development from a single studio at The Piano. The new, expanded location features two beautiful teaching spaces and three music studio pods, all equipped with recording gear.
“Everyone who has visited can’t believe something like this exists,” Sacha says. “People are amazed at the beauty of the building and there’s a sense of calm, which makes it a really creative space. It’s in a great part of town, too, and everyone loves that it’s in a historic Christchurch building.”
Sacha says Christchurch music veterans now based overseas, have been reaching out to see how they can be involved in this innovative new approach to music.
A PledgeMe campaign in November made it possible to fit-out the rooms with recording and production equipment, keyboards, guitars, PA sound systems and acoustic panels. The campaign was a success with 140 pledgers - mainly from Christchurch and Auckland, but also international donors – gifting an impressive $25,542 to make the final touches.
Sacha launched the SOLE concept in Christchurch three years ago to provide singers, songwriters and producers with a clear and guided pathway to establish a career in music. Local musicians and producers – all who have had success in the music industry – act as mentors and tutors.
Lessons and music business sessions have already started at the new location, and work is underway to introduce guest tutors, workshops and events soon.
“This is a fresh and modern way of thinking and approaching the industry, and Christchurch is leading the charge,” Sacha says. “SOLE is a creative hub, and the go-to place for music industry information in Christchurch. Although the focus is on those interested in a career in music, we are open to anyone who is interested in learning more about singing, songwriting and producing.”
