With NZ Music Month upon us again, C4 did something profound (and very grown up!) We sat down and thought about what the month meant to us, and what we - as one of the only nationwide, free to air music channel in the whole wide world, wanted to do about it. We decided, that to us - NZ Music Month is about taking time to discover the new, reflect on the past - and celebrate being lucky enough to be a part of the whole thing. Awwww.
To convey this, C4 has produced a series of "mini doco's" in which NZ musicians from across the years talk openly and candidly about their craft, successes and experiences within NZ music. Amongst these - Pluto talk about their struggle for perfection, Carly Binding ponders how Popstars has affected her career, Don McGlashan demonstrates how the riff for 'Heater' was created, Chris Knox talks about an individuals finite ability to create different melodies and Jordan Luck speaks of the unexpected endurance of the Exponents music. Keep your eyes on C4 for these and many more during May.
Last year C4 brought Shihad - Live in Aotea Square to New Zealand television....and we, stood amongst 7000 others in the rain....stoked that we were capturing the landmark event on tape. This year, C4 was there again to witness the launch of NZ Music Month in Wellington with Deja Voodoo and the Bleeders. We'll be screening this exclusively, with a Homegrown Live Special, on Tuesday May 16th at the earlier time of 8.00pm.
Other NZ Music Month celebrations include...
...the return of Pop Goes the Weasel - tonight at 9.00pm. Hosted by Jaquie Brown, the new season of Pop Goes the Weasel promises to be bigger and better than ever - with new games, hidden cameras and a fancy pants set! A stellar cast of brave competitors includes Sir Howard Morrison, Mike Chunn, Mareko, Savage, members of Steriogram, the Bleeders, Cold By Winter and Blindspott, Matt Heath & Chris Stapp of Deja Voodoo, Nesian Mystik, P.Money...and more.
... the first part of the Low Hum series which will be screening on C4 throughout the year. A Low Hum is the name of the music 'zine', compilation CD and tour co-ordinated by Wellington based photographer 'Blink'. The first episode will screen on C4 Thursday May 25th at 11.30pm and takes a behind the scenes look at the fi rst 2006 A Low Hum tour - headlined by Die! Die! Die! and Connan and The Mockasins.
...'Lindon Puffin's - Figure 8000' - a 90 minute road movie of Lindon Puffin's tour around NZ. Having fronted glam rock band The Puffins during the late 90's, Lindon has reinvented himself as a solo folk / punk act - this documentary shows beautiful footage of NZ mixed with interviews, live footage, icons & idiots, poetry & porn as Lindon makes his 8000 km journey around the country, screening Wednesday May 17th at 8.30pm
C4's much talked about Homegrown Profi les which repeat this month. In these exclusive hour long documentaries we look at the careers of some of New Zealand's most signifi cant artists including - Shihad, Dave Dobbyn, Pluto, Finn Brothers and Bic Runga. Homegrown Profiles screen every Monday during NZ Music Month at 10.30pm.
...exclusive tour diary footage of the Bleeders on their Sweet as Sin tour, shot by viewers who have caught up with them at different venues and towns throughout the country. The Bleeders Tour Diaries capture the behind the scenes madness and will screen on C4 during May.
...the latest in Kiwi videos including some of our favourites - Hollie Smith - Bathe in the River, 5Star Fallout - Seasons, Cobra Khan - Wrapped in Plastic, Autozamm - Ways To Run, D4 'out of control', The Rabble - Carry On, Atlas - Is This Real, Streetwise Scarlet - Don't Say I'm Easy, Bleeders - Nightmares, Concord Dawn - Never Give Up On Love', Recloose - Mana's Bounce, The Sneaks - Kuzai and Die!Die!Die! - Shyness Will Get You Nowhere'.
And oh so much more - including a gig for C4's Vodafone Select Live! viewers featuring Nesian Mystik and Aaradhna - both with new albums out this month and coverage from the Boost Mobile Schools tour with Falter.
And there couldn't be a better time to announce that Smokefreerockquest - New Zealands biggest and most influential youth music event - will be moving to C4 this year! Four half hour episodes along with a one hour grand fi nal will screen on C4 in September. With thanks to NZ on Air.
We'll keep you posted. Till then....happy NZ Music Month!
Love C4
