Heavy music for heavy times: Demons of Noon announce debut EP out 20.4.20

14 April 2020 - 0 Comments

Auckland/Tamaki Makaurau dive bar doom band Demons of Noon release their raw and dark debut EP The Summoning as the world feels set to collapse. Its themes of historical demise and anxiety echo the unease of life under late-stage capitalism.

Demons of Noon
was born as an epiphany in the Karangahake Gorge and forged under St Kevin’s Arcade. The band sees Fortress Europe bass player Jonathan Burgess teaming up with Homebrew guitarist Abraham Kunin, Toad vocalist Scott Satherley and Luger Boa drummer Joseph McElhinney to tune their guitars down and make a welcome return to their heavy roots.

The Summoning’s opening track Sodden takes the listener across the unforgiving sea with an ill-fated Viking raiding party. The tempo then shifts up a notch on Mike, a song of paranoia, anxiety and sweat-soaked sheets —and a timely cry for help for all of us. The EP closes with fire licking at the doors of a Moscow church in 1812 as the last remaining Muscovites huddle in wait for the coming of The Tsar. The Summoning is a visceral slab of slow and loud riffage that hits you right in the gut.

Fans of Bongripper, Conan, Sleep, Swans and Slint will appreciate these gargantuan riffs and geologic tempos. Shihad frontman Jon Toogood described The Summoning as “heavy but not dumb. Right up my alley!” The EP was recorded by Tom Anderson at Nick Abbott’s studio North-Western Recorders and mastered by the legendary James Plotkin.

The Summoning will be unleashed internationally on 20.4.20 through Spotify, Bandcamp and YouTube.
