Hospital Sports are an Auckland three-piece "known for their delicate combination of emo and indie rock" (NZ Musician). On We and You will be their third full-length album, but the first with this line-up of Danny Ebdale, Nick Prussing and Laurence Diack. Their 2017 album Take Care was described as "finely detailed and well-constructed indie rock with emo influences...resembling artists like American Football and TWIABP" (NZ Musician).
Go to Sleep is the first single to be released from the album. After an intricate and lilting intro, the song eventually builds into crushing echoes of "you better bid farewell", in new, more dynamic territory for the band. The album as a whole is about problems we all share; discouragement, falling in love, emptiness and acceptance; not believing your instincts are guiding you the right way; and the challenge of accepting who you are. These last two were big for songwriter Danny Ebdale, after the band broke up following 2017's Take Care. After period of renewal, new songs were written, new bassist Laurence Diack was added, and On We and You came together. The album was recorded by previous bassist Morgan Allen at the well-loved community studio The Depot, in Devonport, Auckland.
Go to Sleep is out everywhere today, and the album can be pre-ordered from Bandcamp.
