MusicHelps donates 60k to #saveourvenues

11 May 2020 - 0 Comments

Dozens of #saveourvenues fundraising campaigns over music month are happening, each with a $1000 koha from Arts Foundation Future Fund, plus 5% of their Boosted campaign target, donated back to them. Now with an additional $2k per venue from MusicHelps as part of their MusicHelpsLive campaign to support up to a total of thirty venues nationwide.

#saveourvenues alongside Boosted LIVE and MusicHelps aim to help raise over $500,000 for venues across Aotearoa. Together the collective are well on their way to this target having raised over $265,000 so far.

MusicHelps Chairperson Campbell Smith said “MusicHelps absolutely recognises our local venues are vital for the music community in New Zealand and make a huge contribution to the music industry, both for performers and those who work in live music. Artists need audiences, and the work the Save Our Venues collective is doing to ensure there will be places for NZ artists to perform in the future is absolutely the kind of initiative that MusicHelps wants to support."

MusicHelps Trustee Ant Healey, of APRA NZ, added “There is no denying the crucial role music venues play. Our songwriters and performers depend on the survival of places to play – not only for the income that helps sustain their music careers but for the community and support that venues provide for artists both on the stage and behind the scenes"

Starting with the inaugural campaign from Whammy & Wine Cellar (Tamaki Makaurau/Auckland) who are on target to raise 100k this week. Boosted LIVE and MusicHelps presents #saveourvenues have been joined by 12 more venues nationwide in just over a week; Darkroom (Otautahi/Christchurch), San Fran (Te Whanganui-a-Tara/Wellington), Cassels Blue Smoke (Otautahi/Christchurch), The Cabana (Ahuriri/Napier), Dog With Two Tails (Otepoti/Dunedin), Neck Of The Woods (Tamaki Makaurau/Auckland), Smash Palace (Turanga-nui-a-Kiwa/Gisborne), Totara Street (Mount Maunganui), Space Academy (Otautahi/Christchurch), Meow (Te Whanganui-a-Tara/Wellington), The Dome Bar (Turanga-nui-a-Kiwa /Gisborne), Cassette Nine (Tamaki Makaurau/Auckland).

Today sees the launch of four new campaigns. Keeping with the pay it forward model, Meow nominates Galatos in Tamaki Makaurau/Auckland, Space Academy nominates Ding Dong Lounge in Tamaki Makaurau/Auckland, The Plant in Waiharakeke/Blenheim was nominated by The Dome, and Wunderbar in Lyttelton/Otautahi by Totara Street.

And on it goes… throughout music month we will see new daily nominations, with New Zealand’s crucial, small venues asking their communities, and the wider community of Aotearoa to help.
