Music News - Mazbou Q Hosts Facebook Discussion with Regi Angelou

Nigerian-Kiwi hip-hop artist and producer Mazbou Q and New York based rapper and poet Regi Angelou will be hosting an online discussion on Facebook Live entitled 'Damn, Did We Miss The Boat?'. The discussion, which will include a number of guests, aims to unpack the experiences of individuals who entered ‘late’ into their creative careers.
Mazbou Q began his career as a full time musician in 2017 after having graduated from university with a Bachelor of Computer Systems Engineering and having worked in the field of software for six years. Regi Angelou began her professional career as a school teacher, then earned a Master’s degree in education and another Master’s degree in school leadership before focusing on her music career. Both artists say that a discussion about the stigma around ‘late bloomer’ creatives is needed.
“I think there are a number of people in the creative space who perhaps feel a bit insecure about their age, and that they might have missed their chance” says Mazbou Q. “It’s not an easy subject to talk about either. I think it’ll be valuable to sit in on a conversation between individuals who have shared those same anxieties, and hear about how they deal with them” he adds.
Regi Angelou says that as a rapper, there are benefits that come with age. “I’m old enough to do whatever I want without considering expectations,” says Angelou. “Sex, drugs and violence dealers use rap music as a marketing tool, [but] I’m lucky enough to avoid that target demographic and get in the path of more unconventional and bold art” she adds.
The online event is set for Sunday May 17th at 1.30pm (NZT) and takes place less than a week before the release of their highly anticipated collaborative single Bruised Soles, set for release on Friday May 22nd. According to Mazbou Q, “The take home message of the song is that regardless of the date on your birth certificate, there is no time like the present. The space on your list of accomplishments is not failure, it is potential”
