Music News - This Week's NZ Music Month Highlights

It is Monday 22nd May – Day #22 of NZ Music Month 2006.

Back by popular demand and just in time for Music Month is APRA seminar Songwriter Speaks. At recent APRA events the most common feedback has been that members want to hear from fellow songwriters who have forged successful careers in music. Tomorrow night at APRAs Auckland offices Brad Carter (Steriogram) and Nathan Haines speak about their song writing methods and their experiences in the local and international music industry. The bNet is getting into the swing of things. Wellingtons Radio Active is celebrating their 100% NZ Music Week. There will be performances by Jeremy Taylor, Cherry’s Gemstones, Luke Buda, OdESSA, Ryan Prebble and Band and Module and Band. During weekdays SAM60 presents the Active Music Forum 12pm-1pm. Guests include James Guthrie (noizyland.com), Brendan Smyth (NZ On Air), Anton Carter (Creative NZ) and Blink (A Low Hum) amongst others.

Meanwhile, Auckland’s 95bFM is playing 100% kiwi tunes this week. The Breakfast Show is celebrating NZ Music Month with the Hour Long Song, where top songwriters come on in get instructions and then head off to the bFM boardroom to compose a song in just 60 minutes. Lawrence Arabia kicks off tomorrow followed by Ryan McPhun, Chris Knox and Electric Confectionaires for the rest of the week. Paul McLaney, James Duncan, Reduction Agents, Juse, Kolab, Missing Teeth, Quick and the Dead, The Mint Chicks, Chris Knox and the Nothing, Shaky Hands, Motocade, The Body Corporate, State of Mind, The Nudie Suits and Farmer Pimp are also playing live on the radio all this week. Heat One of the OUSA Battle of the Bands is happening at ReFuel, Dunedin on Wednesday night. Each band has 15 minutes to impress the judges. Finalists have a big play off on the last night (3rd June) and winners are chosen, receive tons of prizes and radio coverage.

This Saturday ElevenfiftySeven Records are having a wee shindig with Cold By Winter, Kitsch and Cobra Khan 4:20 (upstairs) – 373 K Road, Auckland. It kicks off at 8.30PM and is $10 on the door. Downstairs at Rising Sun it is the Write 4 Gold Official After Party with performances by 4 Corners, Maia Rata, DJs Mouli, Penfold, Thugg Fresh, Lotech VJs and The Disruptiv Allstar Breakers.

This Sunday at The Hot Waves Cafe, Hot Water Beach is having their 2nd Annual NZ Music Month Celebration. There will be performances by Soul Sax, Beach Culcha, Dylan, Red Spencers, Ange Saunders and Denise Norton.

Greg Johnson is back from LA promoting his first single Now the Sun is Out from his forthcoming album Anyone Can Say Goodbye.

Lastly this week, tune into Juice TV at 8am , 1pm, 7.30pm, and 11pm for performances by Minuit, Don McGlashan, Sarah Brown, Donald Reid, dDub, Opensouls, Autozamm, Paul McLaney and One Million Dollars.
