Hamilton musician Shard has released her debut single Wolves today. This is the artist’s first release, a downtempo atmospheric alt-pop mix produced by Tom Lee (of Lee Mvtthews) and released by Empire Records.
“I’ve been singing for as long as I can remember,” Shard says. “But this is the first step of saying to the world, ‘I am an artist and here’s what my music sounds like’. I wanted to write from this space so people could get a feel for my personality and values.”
The 27-year-old has been writing lyrics for many years and recording for the last 12 months. The release of Wolves will be followed up with an album of songs later in 2020. Wolves was inspired by the best-selling book, Women who Run with Wolves, by Clarissa Pinkola Estes.
“I wrote Wolves as a memoir to myself while I was travelling solo. My life was especially wild and free at that time and that’s reflected in the lyrics.”
Shard also recorded the vocals for Hold On, a Lee Mvtthews song released in late last year.
In her third year of a Bachelor of Music and Performing Arts at Wintec, Shard writes about things of cultural importance to her, more specifically women and the freedom of creative expression. Her first music project can be seen as a celebration of being female, growth, self-expression and the extreme metamorphosis that she has undergone over the past few years while finding her voice.
Wolves is now available to stream on Spotify, Apple Music and iTunes here. Watch the lyric video here.
