Rubicon was originally formed in Auckland in 1999 after Paul Reid submitted a demo CD to the 96.1 radio song contest, which resulted in significant airplay and a deal in NZ, Australia and Japan with Wildside Records.
Rubicon released 4 singles between 2000 and 2002 (2 of them top 50) and in 2002 released the debut album Primary, which made it to #16 on the album charts in NZ. In NZ, Rubicon's 2001 video for the single Funny Boy reached #1 on the Juice TV music charts as well as taking out the best indie video award. They repeated that success the following year taking out the award in 2002 with their video Happy Song.
In 2002 they headlined the Big Day Out festival in NZ alongside the Foo Fighters and System Of A Down. Rubicon have toured throughout NZ extensively headlining the Summer Hummer outdoor festival in 2003 as well as embarking on a very successful UK tour, and opening for Good Charlotte over a 5 date arena tour down under.
In Nov 2003 their song Rockstar made waves on US radio with it peaking at #8 in R and Rs Top 20 speciality artists chart where it sat alongside contemporaries such as AFI, Coheed and Cambria and The Strokes.
In mid 2004, after a radical line up change Reid recorded the 2nd Rubicon album The Way It Was Meant To Be in Hollywood.
Under the guidance of Bruce Witkin, who has worked with Foo Fighters and Steriogram, Reid, along with New York born Zant, played all the instruments and vocals on the 13 track album which marks a new level in production and song writing. After hearing the album in mid process, Zumo also hailing from NY, was hooked by the great melodies and exciting drumming and became the permanent drummer for the group
The three-piece band includes "world-famous-in-NZ" TV-Star Paul Reid who played Marshall Heywood on Shortland Street. Other bands Paul Reid have performed with include Loves Ugly Children and The D4. He has also drummed for The Managers and Growler.
Band Members:
Paul Reid (guitar, vocals)
Scott Zant (bass, vocals)
Frank Zumo (drums)

Rubicon Line Up Change Posted: Sat Sep 4, 2004 9:22 am Guitarist Gene Bennett and bassist Jon Corker have left Rubicon to pursue their own musical directions. Gene and Jon resigned in an e-mail to Paul Reid (who is living in Los Angeles), writing . . . “the different directions we have all grown in, no longer share that common thread.” Paul Reid moved to Los Angeles earlier this year to scope out the scene for Rubicon. Reid was expected to return to Auckland mid 2004 to record demos for the second Rubicon album, but in response to his fellow bandmembers leaving the band, Reid has chose to stay in Los Angeles and record, enlisting Los Angeles musicians as needed. "I'm a great believer that everything happens for a reason and this is just an evolution process for Rubicon as it is for us as individuals,” says Reid. “Being In Los Angeles has reinvigorated my desire to play music, write songs and enjoy life.” Rubicon gained strong industry interest from their showcase at the Viper Room in July 2003 and Los Angeles seemed to be the logical place to base the band in the future. The band’s record label Wildside Records has sought to develop the band’s career in the USA, based on the enthusiastic response to the band’s performance at the Viper Room showcase and a successful USA radio campaign late last year which saw Rubicon reach No.8 on the Radio & Record magazine "Alternative Top 20 Specialty Artists" chart. After the release of Rubicon’s debut album Primary in 2002, the band did one demo recording session together and Paul Reid also did demo sessions on his own in New Zealand and another session, soon after he arrived in Los Angeles. While in living in Hollywood, Reid has drummed for other musicians on their showcase gigs and is currently drumming with the Royal Rebels. Next gig is at the Knitting Factory club September 15. Reid is currently putting together a new Los Angeles lineup for Rubicon. Expect to hear and see the first new Rubicon single and video in October. |

Rubicon making waves in USA Posted: Mon Dec 15, 2003 6:11 pm Rubicon's recent US sojourn has had an impact on that market, it woulds seem, with the band making it on to the Top 20 Specialty Artists chart in the USA bible of radio airplay, Radio & Record magazine. In the Alternative section's Top 20 Specialty Artists chart, Rubicon's Yeah Yeah (Rockstar) was No.17 (Nov 21) moving to No.8 (Nov 2 based on nationwide USA sampling of Sunday night new release / specialty radio shows. A special USA-only sampler from the band's debut NZ album Primary has been worked at USA radio by Smart Recordings and First Floor Radio. |

Rubicon Makes Waves In L.A Posted: Thu Jul 17, 2003 8:00 pm Local lads Rubicon impressed all the right people when they played LA's infamous Viper Room last week. Label boss Murray Cammick reports the trio played to a room full of music business people, including a number of influential expat Kiwi - Simon Baeyertz (V2), Simon Williams (ex-Goldfinger), Kirk Gee (book publisher / music writer), Darryn Harkness (Serafin), Jeremy Hammond (recently ex-Universal, at Capitol when Crowded House had their big USA success), Daniel Mancini and Myles Van Urk. Another colourful guest on the night was Los Angeles legend Kim Fowley, in suit and tie, accompanied by bodyguard. Kim produced New Zealand bands StreetTalk and The Crocodiles 20 years ago and helped Rubicon out by giving them the names of many of the LA music business people who attended the showcase, including longtime Sire consultant and record producer Andy Paley. "Joe Berman, who sorted out the Steriogram deal with Capitol was there and expressed interest in Rubicon after the gig," says Murray. "The set was the tightest of the tour, and the various record company, band managers, lawyers and musicians present were blown away by the band's live performance. After the gig, Gene was very politely told off, for standing on the venue's drumkit." |
