First there were some songs. Then there was a name for a band. Then there were gigs booked, but so far there was only a guitarist and drummer. In March 2003, Todd joined The Mufflers on bass. With 9 weeks until the first show (May 2003), panic and chaos ensued. But surprisingly it all held together and The Mufflers were born, featuring ex-members of the Hallelujah Picassos, Misunderstood, The Morning Horns, Semtex, The 4 Squares, and the Sinister Sound System.
Auckland based, The Mufflers ventured down south to play in Wellington at Punkfest '03, and have a song on the Punkfest '03 CD. They have also played at Unityfest '03, now joined by Shamus on guitar.
The Mufflers' sound is described as "kind of fast, and kind of loud!" Their set often features such covers as Operation Ivy, Bikini Kill, The Undertones and their own special version of the theme to Spongebob Squarepants.
In June 2003 the band had only been together for 3 months. Nevertheless, an opportunity to record came up including the chance to submit a song for the 'Pick of the Litter 2' punk compilation. The result is The Mufflers 8-song CD EP/demo, recorded by Dagz at The Dank c/o Puppy Killer Records.
