Andrew J. Bell grew up in the remote rural Bay of Plenty village of Waimana (pop 400) where his father owned Bell’s Four Square general store which has been in the family for more than 100 years.
His parents, both accomplished local musicians, were supportive of their son’s musical adventures, which included a brief sojourn to the southern states of America, residing in Austin, Texas.
He returned to live in Auckland in 1990 where citing influences as diverse as Robert Scott, Prince Tui Teka, and Paul Kelly he began crafting his unique New Zealand vision in song.
