HEX is the heavy triumvirate of Liz Mathews and GG and Kiki Van Newtown. Birthed from a musical lineage that spans classical to folk to punk to metal, these three sisters reflect the chaos approaching post-capitalism, with heavy drums underpinning intricate guitar riffs and dual vocals.
Since late 2015 HEX have performed regularly throughout New Zealand, and have played support for Acid King, Dinosaur Jr. and The Kills, and local favourites Die! Die! Die! and Jakob. In 2016 they tore up dance floors with their sharp anthemic performances around Aotearoa, unleashing their engaging and fierce act at A Low Hum and The Others Way festivals.
HEX's debut EP Calling to the Universe (May 2016 - Southbound Records) received massive support from bNet stations, with four of the five tracks entering the 95bfm top ten. In October 2016 they released “The Moon” - the debut single from their forthcoming album, accompanied by a slow and textured music video shot beside the Hutt river.
Witches of the Hex - HEX
00:00 / 04:26
HEX's music has been described at "lofi metal" (Six Noises), and moves methodically moves between harmony and discord with tempo shifts and interweaving melodies devolving into psychedelic breakdowns before being drawn together again in resolve.
The band crafts each song as a spell, using archetypal images and drawing on literary traditions from Coleridge to Eileen Myles. HEX are community spirits and seek to engage with their audiences on a very real level. HEX are three people trying to make sense of this crazy mixed up world. HEX is the three of cups.
HEX is based in Te Whanganui-a-Tara / Wellington,
Aotearoa / New Zealand.
