DW; The Vadim remix of 'Wide Open' is getting good responses, Vadim really made the track his own.
Do you think remixes are better than originals or are they just different?
I always hope they are just going to sound completely different. I like remixes that mess with my mind, twisting one of our song into another. It's inspiring and a honour to have anyone want to do a remix of one of our songs.
Are you in the Studio when the songs are being remixed or do you let others have free reign and then just listen to the finished product?
The two remixes were done overseas so we were not involved the studio process. We would love to sit in with these great musicians. We listen to the final remix and sign it off, but with these two remixes it was easy to tick the box.
How would you describe the Black Seeds' sound??
A sound that goes well with BBQ :-) Pacific/Bass Heavy/Rock/Reggae/Soul in a roll plus hot sauce.
Haha, nice everything tastes better with hot sauce!
Where do the ideas for all the songs come from, does one of you do all the writing or do you all have a go?
Ideas are come from every member in the band. With six core members we can have little sub groups that can work on grooves/songs and then individuals might come up with ideas and bring them to the band and we develop the idea or song further together.
Do you think your sound has changed or matured since the release of Keep On Pushing in 2001, over 10 years ago?
From 'Keep on Pushing' 2001 to 'Dust and Dirt' I really hear the progression of musicianship and writing. Barney wrote some great tunes on 'Keep on Pushing' and a handful of tracks were done with the whole band. Then with 'On the Sun' the band was writing more together and jamming out more ideas. We started heading into darker moods with 'Into the Dojo' and 'Soild Ground' I like how 'Dust and Dirt' is a good balance of old school reggae/soul and new school ideas
What are your plans for this summer, I know you have A Day on the Green coming up on Sun Dec 16th at Villa Maria Winery in Auckland?
I'll be doing this stink job at a few beautiful places around NZ.
Rad, I wish I had a job like that!
Are you excited about A Day On The Green? I'm going, will you play 'So True' for me?!
'So true' is on the set list so your wish is granted. I hope you don't drink too much like last time and sober up enough to sing along :-) Something so true.......
Do you like playing with other bands, and how many of you are actually in the Fly My Pretties line-up anyway?
It is truly a honor to be apart of this show with so many talented people who are bloody good buggers FMP is such a great show to check out and the Wellington Ukulele Orchestra are fantastic. Seeds playing in FMP Nigel Patterson - Keyboards, Jarney Murphy - Drums, Mike Fab - Gat and Mr B Weir.
I did buy a uke so that I can battle the WUO he he!
What is it like having so many people on stage, what is the best mishap that has happened?? Maybe a wardrobe malfunction?
A performer was locked in a bathroom by accident and found just before having to hit the stage.
What is the optimal number for a band? Are there any extra people you would want to join the band, or some that you could do without?!?! (In a nice way)
Four people in a band would be good, maybe five. We would have more room while travelling and be able to have more backstage food and drink, bonus!
Do you have a preference between playing inside or outside venues, where is the best venue to play?
Most venues are great to play. If the people come to open up and enjoy the music and we give it up energy to the crowd it's a win win situation in any crap venue.
What do you think you would all be doing if you weren't in The Black Seeds?
A stay home Dad would be cool.
If you could plan a summer tour to any places in NZ where would they be?
Maybe a train tour would be cool. We could put on a little show at each station around the north and south island.. Everywhere and anywhere would be great to play, a school tour would also be fun to do too.
I think that the Black Seeds are the most consistently good NZ band, will you still be going strong in 5 years?
Thank you very much. The Seeds are progressing with different ways of approaching writing with each album. We are only on the edge of what we have to offer so I am excited about the future for the band.
Originating from Wellington, The Black Seeds have carved out their reputation through platinum selling albums, a masterful live show, and a sound that fuses infectious grooves and melodies with undiluted roots music. With numerous European festival tours behind them, and a successful 2009 North American album release, their following continues to spread quickly around the globe.
Led by the vocals of Barnaby Weir and Daniel Weetman, at its core The Black Seeds music is a boundary-crossing sound fusion of big-beat funk, dub, soul, mixed with vintage roots-reggae.
Described by Clash Magazine as "one of the best reggae acts on the planet", their legendary 8-piece live show brings the raw energy and good vibes wherever it goes. They have countless sell-out New Zealand and Australasian tours behind them, and regularly perform at many of Europe and North America’s biggest festivals.
