A few minutes with Awa

27 May 2013 // An interview by Dilemma

So you have a new album out, tell me about it?

It's awesome haha! It's called Heartbeat. It is a collection of songs that I have released in NZ and Hawaii and features Che Fu, House of Shem, Anuhea and JB from The Villainz.

How does doing a solo project differ from a group one?

Well, the biggest difference I guess is that it's just me.

Do you miss the boys from Nesian Mystik at times like this or is the solo thing better?

I see the boys all the time, we still do the odd gig in Australia, Those are my brothers, we were a crew before Nesian Mystik and will always be.

What are you hoping for the next year, touring, releasing more singles?

I just want to continue to love what I do. Music is something I can't live without. So continuing to write, release and produce is inevitable. I'm fortunate I do well, both in New Zealand and across the Pacific so I look forward to travelling and seeing the world.

Where is your favourite place to play live?

My favourite place to perform is Tahiti. Beautiful island setting where they speak French. Tahiti is romantic and stunning. I can't wait to head back there.

What is the best piece of advice you've been given, and who from?

My mum always use to say "Everything happens for a reason, so everything's going to be ok". I live my life by those words and my life is great. I'm so thankful and practice gratitude everyday.

What advice do you have for up-and-comers?

Have fun, work hard and do what you love!

How did you get started in music?

Entered the Rockquest in high school, decided music was something I wanted to pursue. I worked hard and wasn't scared of making mistakes.

What is your favourite track on the new album?

I really love Perfect Day that features Hawaiian superstar Anuhea. It's a beautiful duet and showcases Maori, Hawaiian and English.

How would you describe your sound?

Native Soul. A blend of RnB, Soul, Reggae and Waiata Maori.

Do you enjoy collaborating? If you could chose someone to work with who would it be?

I love collaboration! I would love to work with Bruno Mars or Pharell Williams. Great song writers!

Do you think its easier or harder to work on an album by yourself as opposed to with a group?

There are advantages and challenges to both and I enjoy both.

If you could plan your perfect tour where would you choose to play?

Tahiti, Hawaii, Italy, Japan and New Zealand.

What is one thing you can't leave home without?

My iPhone. That's my mobile office. It's sad to realise how crippled I am without it. It also carries my music so I'm able to write where ever I am.

Can you play any instruments?

Yeah, I jam the guitar! Every Maori knows a few chords on the gat.

Start a rumour about yourself

Jessica Alba has the biggest crush on me.

Haha, good rumour, so last question.... what song do you wish you had have written if you had the chance?

I only wish to write songs that ring true for me. Each song I write must come from my soul.
