Jr Kong - 12 inch biscuit press
20 Jun 2009 // A review by jrkong
“Aurally dynamic, and stylistically diverse in a manner that sees multiple changes of mood per song, ‘12 inch biscuit press’ the debut album from mysterious producer jr kong, took me by surprise. To make matters worse (by which I mean better) I guess he’s a futurist, because this release is primarily intended for digital distribution. Abstracting electronic production influence from genres such as dubstep, neo rave and glitch, jr kong then proceeds to temper his sound with qualities undoubtedly informed by more traditional musical movements such as blues and psychedelic, all under-toned by an explicit Kiwi feel. Sonically speaking the album finds jr kong obtaining a comfortable full spectrum mix definitely designed for the club. Chunky kicks and snares, shimmering guitar/synth parts, and dirty, but well EQed bass lines - and most of the time it sounds great… jr kong manages to hook the listeners’ ears on dubstep styled cuts Hegemony and Lame Boy, I find it hard to be too critical. I will definitely be watching out for future releases from this emerging talent”.

About Jr Kong
Being born in a taxi on the side of the road deep in the Urewera Forest is a story few can tell. With such an uncommon start, there was no doubt Jr Kong was going to trek an interesting, albeit, unique path through life, which has provided both the backdrop and seedbed from which his musical development continues to thrive.
A gifted songwriter, producer and musician, Jr Kong’s strong sense of experimentation continues to stretch traditional boundaries, often blurring the line between musical style’s and convention. The abstract use of acoustic/electric guitars, bass-lines, and a diverse selection of instrumentation, has lead many to comment on its originality, describing it simply as “fresh.”
Soul, jazz, rock, reggae, glitch, dnb, electro, and even classical are just some of the many genres on offer in this eclectic mix. Blues has its place too, with Muddy Waters, Jimi Hendrix & Jeff Buckley standing up against the likes of Bob Marley and Curtis Mayfield as influential artists. Shades of J Dilla, DJ Shadow and BT can also be heard.
