Being born in a taxi on the side of the road deep in the Urewera Forest is a story few can tell. With such an uncommon start, there was no doubt Jr Kong was going to trek an interesting, albeit, unique path through life, which has provided both the backdrop and seedbed from which his musical development continues to thrive.
A gifted songwriter, producer and musician, Jr Kong’s strong sense of experimentation continues to stretch traditional boundaries, often blurring the line between musical style’s and convention. The abstract use of acoustic/electric guitars, bass-lines, and a diverse selection of instrumentation, has lead many to comment on its originality, describing it simply as “fresh.”
Soul, jazz, rock, reggae, glitch, dnb, electro, and even classical are just some of the many genres on offer in this eclectic mix. Blues has its place too, with Muddy Waters, Jimi Hendrix & Jeff Buckley standing up against the likes of Bob Marley and Curtis Mayfield as influential artists. Shades of J Dilla, DJ Shadow and BT can also be heard.
September 2008 saw the debut album release of “12 inch biscuit press,” which is an electronic mix of urban styles – soulful, digital and street - with a distinct Kiwi vibe.
“very smart collection of beats and electronica, sassy samples and soul-blues vocals, dub step and skewed electro-psychedelica…strength through diversity is key here and as a sampler/showcase/calling card it is very impressive” Graham Reid - Elsewhere
“Aurally dynamic, and stylistically diverse in a manner that sees multiple changes of mood per song, ‘12 inch biscuit press’ the debut album from mysterious producer Jr Kong, took me by surprise. I will definitely be watching out for future releases from this emerging talent” NZ Musician
Its uniqueness has grabbed both local and national attention, and is frequently showcased on bFM and is in popular demand throughout the bNet student stations nationwide, also featuring on the Red Bull Live Session's.
His second album is planned for release in summer. With a solo acoustic project also planned, the year is shaping up to be an eventful one, and one that will no doubt consolidate his position as a very unique emerging talent.
