Recorded Live at the Auckland Town Hall.
As far as music goes, Eru Dangerspiel is in a fresh new league of its own. An all-star ensemble, which without trying raises expectations to a level that could become an epic disappointment or a spiritual experience.
Riki Gooch when not playing drums acts as the ring leader or conductor for the Dangerspiel dub-funk-roots-soul-jazz (did I miss anything out?) experience that boasts names of some of the best musicians that NZ has to offer for this colossal 30 piece band. Not forgetting to mention individual music legends like soul full Whirimako Black and the stunning Anna Coddington. In their own rights these musicians could sell out crowds but together little practice and the chaos that comes from 10+ voices, instruments and beats, feels so in sync that it has to be seen to be comprehended.
Great news for the modern man has all the intimate moments of a live Eru Dangerspiel show despite only having 7 tracks, which are nothing short of mind-blowing and that will make you fall in love with music again and again.
Starting off with the sweet and soulful track Backfoot with beats and taunting trumpets.
You would know has a haunting choir in the background and changes of pace that build intensity in this track.
The third track Hold up has an interesting interlude about Martians. This song is driven by powerful pounding drums and Laughton Kora’s vocal styling.
Say Honestly begins with the love vibe accompanied by lyrics and piano is absolutely beautiful.
Maia starts off very slow, but at minute 4 turns into a majestic duet between what feels like two lovers kept a part but forever trying to run into each other’s arms. Mara TK and Whirimako Black are more captivating than a 2 hour romantic movie ever could be.
Sun Again lead by Anna Coddington is a sassy and engaging hand clapper.
Sambaskool Dropout is about 17 mins of soul-meets-choral religious revival of wailing and wild funk.
Eru Dangerspiel is a mesmeric group led by former TrinityRoots' drummer and master percussionist Riki Gooch. Gooch guides a stellar line-up of New Zealand's finest musicians, performing dirty, bottom-heavy funk and psychedelic rhythm and blues. Since the release of the exciting album Great News For the Modern Man, Eru Dangerspiel has performed with everything from a 36-piece choir at the Auckland Town Hall, a 29 piece band on stage at Rippon, to selected wickedly catchy sound system sets, with special guest “cousins”.
2009's sold-out, critically acclaimed, mind-warping show left punters hankering for more and elicited ecstatic responses from many who cited it as the show of the year. The band featured on the CD and 5.1 Surround Sound DVD from that show includes soul legend Whirimako Black, multi-instrumentalist/composer Jonathan Crayford, Laughton and Fran Kora, Anna Coddington, Mara TK (Electric Wire Hustle), Parks (Ladi6), Chip Matthews, Julien Dyne and Isaac Aesili (all Opensouls), Joe Lindsay, Scott Towers and Toby Laing (all Fat Freddy’s Drop), Mike Fabulous (The Black Seeds Lord Echo), Will Ricketts (The Phoenix Foundation), Ross Burge (The Mutton Birds), Ned Ngatae (Dimmer), Submariner (Che Fu, The Turnaround), Lewis McCallum, Olga Gryniewicz, Nathan Haines and The Dangerspiel Community Municipal City Choir.
"Bringing together a vibrant mixture of local musicians, more than just a celebration of band leader Riki Gooch’s idiosyncratic compositions - the Eru Dangerspiel concert was a celebration of New Zealand's musical community and its intimate connection with audiences across the country. Viva La Musica!" - Martyn Pepperell
