Eight - Eight & Opshop 08/04

31 Aug 2004 // A review by Dilemma
Going into Altitude in Hamilton is always an exciting prospect especially when you’re seeing NZ music, but good NZ music. Eight are one of my fav NZ bands, and OpShop are growing on me more and more.

The surprise of the night for me was how good OpShop are live, I liked their music before I saw them live but they really put on a tight set. They started out slow and built the groove up to hammering out pure rock with Behind The Sun and No Ordinary Thing. By this stage Altitude was packed which was a total credit to their performance. There was also a song about war which intrigued me - so listen out they are great and definitely a great band to watch live.
Song I rate: Saturated.

Now I'm a big Eight fan, I've seen them live pretty much anytime they have been in Hamilton or Raglan, and I must say I’m still not sick of them. Eight really know how to rock. The last time I saw them was in Diggers in Hamilton, a more intimate setting and they really got in touch with the audience, long emotive guitar solos, really captivated the audience. But last night… Last night was a rock show to be reckoned with – a side of eight that I haven’t really seen but I highly recommend you experience. Still captivating with the classic emotional lyrics and hypnotic vibe that Eight is famous for but, but adding guitar and drum thrashing in true ‘Rock Style’ that in the middle of the set one of Paul’s floor toms needed a bit of TLC. If this gig is coming to your town soon, don’t miss out!!!
Song I rate: Centre Of Me

About Eight

Formed in 1996, Auckland band Eight have been in no rush, instead allowing their music to breathe and take shape over time. This willingness to explore and define their own sound has been rewarded, as Eight's music is both mature and powerfully dynamic. Their songs capture a variety of moods from enveloping rock radio hits to brooding melodic soundscapes.

Although relative new-comers on the wider public radar, Eight have been quietly but firmly establishing their presence on the local music scene. They have independently released three singles in New Zealand to date ('Whale', 'Moments Gone' and 'Shift'), all of which have gained solid sales and received high rotate radio and music television support.

A twist of fate, or perhaps a bizarre marketing ploy, that in their eighth year Eight finally released their very first full length album, aptly titled 'Moving'.

Jayson Norris - Save My Soul EP Review
16 May 2014 // by Dilemma
New from Jayson Norris is the Save My Soul EP as part of NZ Music Month. If you are a fan of Kora style rock or Tiki Taane melodies then you will love this five-song EP, cleverly incorporating roots and the groove of mainstream guitar rock’n’soul to blur genres.

Estère - Estere Album Review
10 May 2014 // by Dilemma
Released as a free download via Bandcamp the debut EP from Wellington singer/songwriter/beatmaker/producer Estere is definitely unique in the NZ music scene. Self-described as “just a girl with an MPC” Estere works her equipment and the product is individualistic, raw and worthy of a listen this NZ Music Month.
