Horror Story 19/02/2011 the Royal, Palmerston North
It feels like forever since Horror Story have been to Palmy so I was very excited at the prospect of seeing them again. With three local bands playing support this was looking like another great night of local music and it was a great night we got.
I missed out on the opening set from Cephalopod but from what I heard they were very impressive and I regret not getting there earlier. I will be making sure I get to see them next show that they do.
The first band I got to see was Ricky Bobby and they have been around for a few years and keep getting better and better. I’m more into my straight Metal than Hardcore but these guys do a great job at it. Olly their singer is a mad man. He comes out ready to smash the place up and his energy is one of the driving forces of the band. They have quite an established fan base which was evident by the pit which was going crazy. Their fans know the songs right to the point where one of the guys jumped on stage to sing a song with them. These guys have been touring a lot nationally and it shows as they flew through their set. If you’re into Hardcore then check these guys out.
Black Chrome were up next and these guys do Rock n Roll with a Punk edge, bringing to mind bands such as Motorhead and Iggy and the Stooges and even a little hint of Bruce Springsteen. These guys are a bit of a Palmy institution and it’s great to see them still rocking. They rocked through a set of original numbers that had the crowd bouncing and singing along to the familiar ones.
Horror Story was the reason I was there. I love these guy's live show. Being a huge fan of Horror punk these guys are awesome. The Misfits being one of their major influences these guys pull it all together like magic. I’m a huge Glenn Danzig and these guys invoke his spirit through their music. All original numbers they blistered through their set. Last time I saw them they even had death locks which I thought was very cool but unfortunately they didn’t do it for this show. Thankfully I was very quick to forget that as my head started to bang during their first song.
Nigel Von Toxic is a work horse and at the end of the Horror Story set he didn’t miss a beat and we got a bonus set from Cyclotrode X which is another of Nigel Von Toxic’s band with him on vocals. Dr D.W Hell the Horror story can sing like Glenn Danzig but Nigel von toxic even looks a lot like Danzig. You can’t keep this man down as he has been in and is still in multiple bands. He is an unsung NZ music hero. I loved both sets and am now a big fan of Cyclotrode X now I have been initiated. Go out buy their albums and get to their shows because they are a hell of a lot of fun and know how to put on one hell of a show.
About Horror Story
On Halloween that year the band recorded a 17 song Demo called Monsterpiece which was released in 2001 by the bands Demon Nation label. A limited edition of 1000 copies were snapped up by horror-hungry fiends! The albums werewolf sing-along 13 Moons also featured on Auckland label Puppykiller Records - Pick of the Litter compilation.
For Halloween 2002 the band (complete with new rhythm section) recorded 10 new songs and re-recorded 10 songs from Monsterpiece. Combined with a video for Tombstone (made in a local graveyard) and a full colour portrait of the band on its cover Graverobbers From Outer Space was released on Halloween 2003 by Demon Nation.

It was a very sad day when Ozzy Osbourne had to cancel his New Zealand tour, but it came with a silver lining. We had one Judas Priest show, turning them from being a support slot to full headliners.
