There’s such a proliferation of music being made on the Mac that it almost deserves its own genre. Unfortunately that wouldn’t help anyone trying to describe Cybiont’s fourth album, So Much Work For Love.
I’ve been trying to come up with ways to describe what he does with little luck. Just when I think I’ve got it pegged, the sound changes and I have to begin again. Sometimes there’s a real Nick Cave feel to it, particularly on the rockier duets, but then it goes and turns into something like a moody Nine Inch Nails.
It’s those Nick Cave-ish moments that stood out for me. The two voices (and with no physical CD and no bio notes I’ve got no idea who the girl singing with Cybiont is) work well together and create some nice harmonies, with the track Work It Out being the best example on the album.
At times though Cybiont seems to put on an odd accent that distracts from what he’s trying to achieve musically, but does add to the uniqueness of his sound.
The whole concept behind his music is based on an idea by French scientist Joel de Rosnay who claims that we’re about to make an evolutionary leap to a planetary super organism made up of “all humans, machines, organisms, networks and nations". His music certainly seems to encompass that ideal, taking bits and pieces of many styles and combining them into something greater.
It’s not going to be music that everyone can get into, but it’s an interesting idea and there are some well written tracks on the album, alongside a healthy dose of experimentation and musical exploration. PRELUDE:
French scientist and visionary Joel de Rosnay, argues that we are on the verge of a profound evolutionary leap. This next stage in the natural progression from lower to higher levels of organization – cell into organism, organism into population, population into ecosystem – is the cybiont. A planetary super organism made up of all humans, machines, organisms, networks, and nations. A planetary brain - with humans as its neurons.
