Jeremy Mason - You Will Never Know Everything EP

25 Oct 2011 // A review by Mmdelai
Jeremy Mason's four track EP "You Will Never Know Everything" was self released in September, this his second release after "Distorted Vision".  His solo music is subtle acoustic singer song writer stuff, a far cry from his period playing bass in kiwi punk band "Kill the Fake Patient".

As with most of the singer songwriter genre, his voice is slightly unique.  I think it might be a very small lisp, you wouldn't notice it in general but I guess that's what his slightly differentness is… if you're looking for specifics.  It's nice enough to listen to in the background, but no different to anything else in the genre…. vocals with the guitar noodling away quietly in the behind them.  I thought it would be nice to listen to without concentrating so much on the lyrics, but it's very… un-produced … if you get me, so musically it's just guitar and you can't help but hear every single word he says.  I should also mention though that he recorded this EP in five hours, so all these tracks must be first takes.  Four tracks in five hours is a great effort in any case!

I'd be interested to hear what the songs sound like with a band or some more musically interesting textures.  It seems the recorded tracks are just "the bare bones of meticulously crafted folk songs".  That's lovely, but I wish I could hear those ones instead!  Nice voice, nice guitar playing just not overly interesting or beautiful to me with such minimal song arrangement and set up.  BUT that's not to say you won't find it absolutely fantastic, especially if you're into the singer song writer stuff and would like to be sung a lullaby by a breathy voiced man!  I imagine he'd be good live and he's doing a New Zealand tour in December (returning home after being based in London and Glasgow), so maybe we'll get to hear those tunes in their intended form!

About Jeremy Mason

Jeremy Mason is a songwriter from Wellington, New Zealand. He writes minimalist alternative folk songs, accompanying his guitar with a “gentle voice which neatly undercuts some stark and dark imagery” (Elsewhere).

In 2005 he formed the punk band Kill The Fake Patient, which after 3 years and endless touring disbanded following the release of their debut album, Inside the Unattainable. Jeremy has since spent his time working on solo material between London and Glasgow.

His debut EP, Distorted Vision was self-released in April 2010 and revealed what Under the Radar described as “Beautiful music… with insistent spare strumming and haunting lyrics.” His follow up EP, You Will Never Know Everything, is due for release in August 2011 with supporting shows scheduled in the UK and Europe.

This Flight Tonight - Friendly Fire Album Review

This Flight Tonight have coined their own genre as "dynamic rock".  As the album progressed I was more and more convinced, started hearing subtle elements of their self proclaimed influences in the vocals and drums (Radiohead, Jeff Buckley).

The Veils - Sun Gangs Album Review
19 Nov 2010 // by Mmdelai
It was a trip to Real Groovy on the first day this album came out for me, I raced back to the car, eager to find inspiration in The Veil's new album "Sun Gangs".  I have always been so moved by the sparse, reverb drenched music of The Veils - Finn Andrew's compositions have a mystery about them that leaves me pouring over the tracks repeatedly.
