It’s hard enough getting a bunch of musicians together to write and record songs when they all live in the same city, so it must be an absolute nightmare when they live on opposite sides of the globe. It would become damn near impossible when those musicians haven’t even met and have only spoken once (for a radio interview at that).
But somehow Si White, performing as Psyrok and Sweden’s Jenny Larsson (aka Li’l Sister Jen) did and managed to produce an interesting EP of mellow, moody trip hop. While there’s only five songs on the EP, it’s definitely a good taster of what Psyrok can do.
This isn’t the first time the two have worked together, having collaborated on an EP in 2009. It’s certainly a different way of working and one that has had an impact on the overall sound of the EP, resulting in a minimalism and starkness that ties the five songs together.
It’d be interesting to see whether the concept would work when applied to a full length album – based on this EP I can only hope we get the chance to find out.
Psyrok is a cross-genre electronica producer and songwriter based in Wellington, New Zealand. He also runs his own micro-label Psylince Records.
Psyrok recently released the collaborative EP 'Calculus' featuring Swedish vocalist Jenny Larsson (aka Li'l Sister Jen). The two have never met and until they were introduced during an interview on Radio New Zealand's 'Music 101' show, they had never even spoken. The EP was created entirely over the internet with Psyrok writing and producing the music and Jenny contributing vocals.
Psyrok has previously released another EP featuring Jenny Larsson, titled 'Akinosuke' and his debut solo release 'Volume 1'.
