Donell Lewis - Missing My Love EP Review

17 Oct 2012 // A review by Dilemma

Donell Lewis has recently released a 6 track EP called 'Missing My Love' with the title song being the hottest new tune on YouTube and urban radio. Missing My Love is the third track and it features Fortafy aka Sam Ratumaituvuki. Both D. Lewis and Fortafy have their roots in NZ R&B and Rap but this track could be likened to anything by artists such as Jason Derulo and Ne-yo.

The EP opens with 'Take It Off' and 'Put It On Me' Feating Rickey Okay, obviously introducing the theme of the EP being about love but with solid beats in the background.  Both tracks are very catchy and definitely in the realms of club thumpers.  By the end of the EP Donell slows it down a bit showcasing more of his vocal ability and sensuality in 'Grown Man' and making everyone swoon in the closing track 'Open' which is more of an R&B ballad.

If this is insight into what is to come on his new album then I am sure you will be impressed.

About Donell Lewis

Donell Lewis, of Samoan descent, was born in South Auckland before moving to the North Shore. He grew up playing sport and going to church and had very little interest in music. At the age of 15, he stumbled across his untapped potential after making a song on some run down equipment in his garage. After showing a few people from school, he received incredible amounts of praise and positive feedback. He then realised he had discovered a talent he never knew he had, and naturally, he wanted to pursue his options and see where this could take him.

A few years later in 2010, singer songwriter D.Lewis was born. He signed with G.E.M (Green Eyed Monster) in hope to make it big, and released his first single All Night featuring G.E.M’s founder EN-V. His time at G.E.M was short lived and he eventually found himself back at square one; however he had now learnt a thing or two about the music industry and was prepared to give it another go.

In between meetings with various record labels, D.Lewis worked hard in his home-made studio. He produced beats, recorded songs and compiled a number of tracks which he hoped would one day be recognised. You Tube became his way of letting the world know what he was made of, and he was eventually contacted by an old friend and super producer DLove. DLove organised a meeting with D.Lewis and the team at DNK World Music, in hopes to help D.Lewis get a head start on the career he wanted so bad.

New from Jayson Norris is the Save My Soul EP as part of NZ Music Month. If you are a fan of Kora style rock or Tiki Taane melodies then you will love this five-song EP, cleverly incorporating roots and the groove of mainstream guitar rock’n’soul to blur genres.

Estère - Estere Album Review
10 May 2014 // by Dilemma
Released as a free download via Bandcamp the debut EP from Wellington singer/songwriter/beatmaker/producer Estere is definitely unique in the NZ music scene. Self-described as “just a girl with an MPC” Estere works her equipment and the product is individualistic, raw and worthy of a listen this NZ Music Month.
