About a year ago I interviewed Auckland rockers SansArcade about their campaign to raise funds to record their debut EP. At the time they assured me that it would be out within months. I kept an eye out for the recording but after a while forgot about it under the deluge of music that gets sent my way.
That work, Re Entry, is now finally completed and is a fine collection of five 90’s influenced rock songs. I enjoyed the songs on my first listen, and have enjoyed them more with each subsequent listen. I’m not sure whether the extra time spent on producing the album has resulted in the band creating a better recording than they would if they had stuck to their original timeframe, but either way, this is a pretty solid EP.
The songs, while definitely original, remind me of bands like Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots and Soundgarden (or at least the mid-90’s versions of those bands), so it’s pretty clear where the band draws their influences from, yet they never sound like they want to emulate those bands.
There’s also a pop element throughout the EP, with the second track Turn Up The Radio sounding like it was made for mainstream radio play; the rest of the tracks also have a good energy to them, and it’s not hard to imagine a packed bar all dancing along to the live versions of the songs.
All up, this was a good start for SansArcade and a good sign of what we can expect from them in the future.
Music that's a little 'all-up-in-your-face' with a bit of 'let-me-down-gently' since 2012.
