Oakley Grenell - The Deep Album Review
Listening to this record for the first time was a breath of fresh air. With so many Kiwi hip hop artists and beat makers writing the same old wannabe American Gangster drivel, it was inspiring to hear a guy construct something uplifting, tasteful and sonically dynamic.
The grooves have a pacific edge to them, but also encompass a truly international flavor. The instrumentation on the record is outstanding, the lyrics are meaningful and the beats are laid down thick and juicy.
It is unfathomable that this is the first time I have heard of Oakley as this is his 11th self produced record. I wish I had cottoned onto his unique flavours much early, but on the bright side I have a huge back catalogue to invest some time in listening too.
The record features a plethora of guest artists, too many to list in this review, but each artist brings something fresh to the mix. The record was mastered by Dave Cooley, who has worked with everyone from Ziggy Marley to The Delphonics and it shows in the crisp but weighty masters.
I look forward to hearing more from Oakley, as I believe producers like this guy are the future of NZ Hip Hop. An uncompromising, eclectic record that will be on repeat on my stereo for weeks to come. Choice effort bro.

About Oakley Grenell
Oakley is a Christchurch Jazz School Scholarship Graduate of Guitar. He is a member of the highly popular reggae band Bunyip and also recently formed the group the Otautahi Allstars. This group was formed, recorded, gigged, and disbanded all in the space of 2 weeks.

When I received this record I had no idea what to expect. The press information describes the sound as a cathartic experience founded on cinematic arrangements wrapped around the lead singer, Sarah Macombee's, exquisite voice, so it all sounded fairly self indulgent.

The second tune from Tali's forthcoming record Wolves is a huge departure from the UK drum n bass that made her a worldwide name. Faster Than Sound is a self declared love song and is closer to trip hop than Tali's traditional "Boobs to the Wall" DnB; which is a great departure in my eyes.
