Around the start of November I look forward to the announcement of my favourite summer festival of all that is great about New Zealand music. I start off by looking to see what Rock acts are playing and then look to see if my favourite non rock band Kora is playing. Each year I try to do something different and discover a new favourite band that I haven’t listened to or seen before.
This year my favourites in rock were there. Currently I really rate Villainy, Devilskin and Blacklistt as the best that New Zealand rock has to offer and I’m always excited to see their show. Shihad were the headliners for the rock stage and it always interesting to see the bands step up because it won’t be too long before Shihad will move aside and let the next band become the darlings of the New Zealand rock scene.
Villainy always rock and Devilskin are taking the rock world by storm and with the line-up of shows that they have coming up it’s a privilege to get to see them tearing it up. The Axeman and Nail are a perfect combo with their red goatees and crowd interaction winning over more and more people with each show they do. Blacklistt are awesome and I always love seeing these guys. The energy that exudes from this band is huge and their following is the same. These guys have always got my head bouncing, toes tapping and fists flying in the air as they give the rock stage everything that they expect. The crowd always roars in appreciation of these guys.
One of the bands that took me out of my comfort zone as a rocker and metal head was Shapeshifter. This band was amazing to watch and the energy and souring vocals were more than impressive. This is why I love coming to Homegrown so much new experiences and new bands to follow. Last but not least are my favourite New Zealand non rock act Kora and they get better and better every time I see them. Not only are they a class act musically but also their animated performance and showmanship guarantees there isn’t a still body in the crowd. These guys have a huge sound and huge show that even us rockers and metalheads cannot deny.
Every year I look forward to my pilgrimage to Wellington for the greatest day of the year for New Zealand music fans, with all the best old and new that this country has to offer. It’s always an honour to attend and that fact that it always sells out tells you I’m not wrong and am amongst fellow believers.
