Young Christchurch locals, Black Fox Trio, have recently released their debut EP titled Rhythm Is Your King, and let me tell you: it is well worth a listen.
Jazzy and bluesy drums with plenty of energy, tight bass work, and a great guitarist that knows when to step back, and when to let loose round out a truly unique approach to rock. Shared vocal duties provide a great sense of contrast on first listen, which only get tighter and more refined as you absorb the content. This release reminds me in parts of fellow Christchurch rockers Skelter, probably in the attention to detail and groove, providing fast high energy beats, driven by an expert drummer. In other parts I am reminded heavily of The Datsuns and The D4, which is never a bad thing either! The guitar work reminds me heavily of old school blues in its laid back approach, perfectly fitting in with the other components of the band.
I find it hard to draw to many comparisons to this work; because it is so well crafted it feels like an entity of its own, a wholly unique approach to a staple in the music world. A refreshing rehash of previous influences, breathing life into a much needed music scene.
Christchurch seems to be pumping out some killer rock bands at the moment, and these guys are no exception to the trend. Make sure you pick up the release and catch them at any show you can, the energy these guys exude onstage is enthralling and inescapable. I thoroughly look forward to seeing what these guys put out next, and I hope you do too!
Hailing from Christchurch Black Fox Trio provide a unique blend of classic but hard hitting rock, infused with groove and a twist of the blues. Together they seek to bring everything hard-hitting and groovy to the table.
The trio have been making themselves well known in the Christchurch Rock scene, playing with many of the local favourites, as well as winning a fan-based poll to open for NZ/UK band I Am Giant, and receiving NZ On Air funding to create their latest video Giants.
