Sake Bomb Released
Posted: Thu Dec 2, 2004 8:34 pm
“Blowing up the PA system is the stuff of ordinary legend in garage rock. It takes a special talent to set the PA on fire by playing through it.” Russell Brown -www.publicaddress.net-

It’s a Friday Night. The King’s Arms is the place, and the place is packed…the moon is full and as the midnight hour approaches the D4 are well into a blistering set of new tracks from the forthcoming album and the staple favourites. The band is loud & hot, and while the crowd can handle it, the speakers can not…

Midway through Dion’s manic solo in the soon to be classic stalker ballad ‘Stops Me Cold’ the audience began cheering and pointing at the stage right PA speaker as it smoked, crackled, and burst into flame. As the band continued to play, the promoters realized what was afoot, and the speaker was quickly unplugged, hosed down, and removed.

The D4 did not pause for even a moment before launching into another bloodthirsty number from the upcoming new record, working the crowd into a sweating frenzy and proving that the best moments in rock n roll can never be scripted or expected.

What you can expect however, is another full length record from this bunch of stinking, burning, depraved maniacs to be released early in 2005. In the meantime, satisfy your incendiary urges with the new single ‘SAKE BOMB’, out NOW through Flying Nun Records.

The D4 play the sold out Homebake Festival on Dec 4th in Australia as well as their own headline shows before returning to NZ to play the Beach Day Out tour over the New Year. See them again at the Big Day Outs and on their National Tour upon release of their forthcoming album.

Big American D4 Debut Looms
Posted: Sat Mar 29, 2003 11:33 am
Thanks to Median Strip for the following...

Fresh from their 'watched by millions' performance on Letterman last night (March 26), The D4 look set to solidify their rapidly growing profile in the US with an unprecedented chart debut.

Median Strip understands the band's 6Twenty debut, which went on sale in the US yesterday, has shipped somewhere in the region of 100,000 copies to retail nationwide. That figure may not translate immediately to actual sales, but the ordering of such a large quantity of stock by a brand new (to Americans anyway) act is a sign that retailers have very high hopes.

A strong debut on the Billboard albums charts seems a certainty, says FMR MD Mark Ashbridge. It would follow this week's UK Singles chart debut for the just-released Ladies Man, which entered at #41.

A big week of sales would not only set the band up for its next touring phase, kicking off this week, but back up some of the press hype to have surrounded them since arriving in the US.

In the last month, glowing reports have graced the likes of Rolling Stone, New York Post, Billboard, the San Francisco Chronicle, Entertainment Weekly and others.

The LA Times last week credited The D4, along with The Datsuns, with generating the biggestt 'buzz' of the 1000-plus international acts to play South by SouthWest in Texas.

"Each played a raw, unpolished style in the vein of the White Stripes and Strokes, but their music's added urgency and grit seemed well suited for SXSW, where sweat, egos and booze traditionally mix during the fast-paced affair, which ended Sunday.

"The D4 immediately rose above the din when its Stooges-gone-
surfing rocker Get Loose kicked off its set... Midway through his band's outdoor performance the following afternoon at Spin magazine's private party, The D4's scruffy frontman, Jimmy Christmas, proudly reflected: 'This has been more fun than we thought it would'."

D4 News

It's a big week for The D4 for a couple of reasons. The D4's album '6Twenty' is released in the US through Hollywood Records, and the word on the street is that they are due to play the David Letterman show tomorrow (however the CBS
website still shows guests TBA for Tuesdays show - as below).

If all goes according to plan, it will air Thursday night at 11.30 pm on Prime TV in NZ PLUS The D4's Ladies Man single entered the UK National singles chart
lastnight at # 41 !!! (the second single in a row to hit this position!)

The band are currently in New York in the middle of their US tour...dates for the remainder of this week include - Minneapolis, Madison (Wisconsin), Chicago, Detroit, & Cleveland.

FYi - '6 Twenty' will be released in Japan on April 9th through Sony

D4 off to SXSW
Posted: Sat Jan 4, 2003 1:41 pm
The Datsuns, The D4 and Pan Am have been confirmed as acts at next year's prestigious South by Southwest festival in the in Austin, Texas.

It'll be a return visit for the D4 and Datsuns (they both appeared at last year's event), and they seem to created something of a bridgehead for a major kiwi invasion, as it would appear up to 19 New Zealand bands have applied for spots at this year's showcase.

Final lineups are due to be announced as the showcase directors work their way through the submissions from around the world. Keep up to date with SXSW developments at http://www.sxsw.com/

The D4 ink U.S. record deal!
Posted: Thu Nov 28, 2002 5:05 pm
Thanks to Soundsnz for this story:

Following much speculation The D4 have completed the signing of a deal that will see the bands debut album, '6Twenty', released through Hollywood Records in the U.S.A.

This is an absolutely incredible achievement as the deal means that '6Twenty' will now be released in every major music market worldwide, with releases through Flying Nun in New Zealand and Australia, Infectious Records in the UK, Play It Again Sam throughout Europe, & Sony Music Japan who will be releasing the album February 2003.

Mark Ashbridge FMR Managing Director: "It has been a goal for FMR and Flying Nun to put a band on the world stage for some time now and we are all absolutely thrilled for The D4 and what this means for NZ music and our company. ...financially the Hollywood deal is one of the biggest achieved by any NZ Artist and I know that The D4 are happy to be on a label that will be giving them top priority in the coming years."

The band, who are currently on a UK & European tour, were last night celebrating in Dublin but were unavailable for comment. Festival Mushroom Records Chairman Roger Grierson adds "The D4 are at the forefront of the new breed of New Zealanders taking their music to the world. Hollywood Records pursued the band, FMR and myself aggressively and enthusiastically for some time ; and there is no doubt they LOVE The D4. With Sony licensing the band for Japan, the world is The D4's oyster. So as the thousand kids out to see them on a rainy Monday night this week in London's Soho screamed:
"PARTY!"

The D4 return to New Zealand to play at The Big Day Out 2003 on January 17th.

Hollywood Beckons To The D4
Posted: Tue Nov 19, 2002 7:39 pm
Festival Mushroom Records are expected to announce shortly the details of a major American record deal for The D4. Coming hot on the heels of their licensing deal with Sony Japan, a US licence deal is with Hollywood Records is likely to be confirmed this week - giving the band a huge international boost.

The deal is done, we understand, and the contracts couriered to the band in Germany. FMR boss Mark Ashbridge says an announcement will be made once everything is signed and sealed.

Hollywood Records is owned by the Disney Corporation and specialises in soundtracks, however its roster also includes a range of 'cutting edge' artists, both mainstream and alternative, and is well-connected throughout the industry. The D4's 6Twenty album will become a 'priority' release for the label.

The D4 Release In Japan
Posted: Sun Nov 3, 2002 1:10 pm
Following an incredible year which has seen Flying Nun's The D4 signed, released and relentlessly on tour in the UK, Europe and Australia, we're very proud to announce that The D4 have indeed (as speculated in the press) have a release agreed for '6Twenty' through Sony Music in Japan.

As FMRs Managing Director Mark Ashbridge explains:

"Basically, Sony Music Japan flew over and saw the boys doing an instore in Melbourne and 5 days later they said we're in!! Now that's an indication of what The D4 can do to you live."

"As with Infectious Records in the UK, and P.I.A.S in Europe, FMR have an arrangement with Sony Music for the Asia Region, and The D4 are the first NZ act that they have agreed to release in Japan, so we are excited about that and look forward to some of our other artists working thorugh these channels in the future."

'6Twenty' will be released in Japan through Sony Music in February 2003.
