Voodoo Bloo - Single Review: Her Name Was Human

13 Aug 2020 // A review by Kerry MB

Voodoo Bloo is the new music project of Rory McDonald. If his name sounds familiar it’ll be because he was the founder (vocals and bass) of now defunct alternative rock/punk Wellington band, Lucifer Gunne.

With his unique vocal tone, Rory is now leading the way for Voodoo Bloo and they’re just released their second single from their newly released album, Jacobus.

Her Name Was Human is definitely more indie sounding than expected at first but it still has some great punk overtones with enough tempo changes to make it feel like you’re listening to at least three songs in one.

It’s jingly guitars and Rory’s baritone vocal tone make it distinct and original and there is some great riffs, although I wish those riffs lasted a bit longer than they did.

Nevertheless, there is real promise with this single and I like the sporadic feel of it. It’s a little hodgepodge here and there but I think that adds to the dynamic and it fits together well.

Rating: ( 4 / 5 )

Shady Brain Farm hail from North-West Auckland — specifically Kumeu, Waimauku, and Muriwai Beach — and has been making music together since 1997. Hadees Drudge - Album Review: The Mind Lies When The Soul Dies

Hadees Drudge is quite an anomaly in Wellington’s metal scene. Forgoing a second guitarist, they proudly rock one guitar in a genre where that’s almost unheard of.
