Corrella - Single Review: Little Circles

04 Apr 2023 // A review by Kerry MB

Corrella are a 7-piece roots reggae band, formed in 2017 and hailing from Auckland’s North Shore, and named after Corrella Road in Belmont.

Having released their debut single, Summertime in Aotearoa back in 2020, their debut EP soon followed in 2021, with three of those tracks making in onto the NZ Music Charts - an impressive feat for any rising band.

Recorded at Parachute studios in Auckland, Little Circles is their new single and according to Corrella, "a love song sure to give you butterflies". Songwriter and rhythm guitarist Te Naawe Tupe sums it up as “Everyone can relate to a moment or think of a person when they hear this track.”

Little Circles encompasses that well and it also feels like a quintessential Kiwi summer vibe. It has melody, great rhythm and does capture that ‘butterfly’ feeling lyrically.

Like all roots reggae music, there is a lot to like here, and it also shows off the great musicianship between them all. Rebekah Brady (Te Arawa, Nga Puhi) - lead vocalist has a beautiful range and I feel this is just a glimpse of her talents.

Although 7 members seems a lot in a band - for Corrella it is perfect. There is nothing busy about Little Circles. It has flow and depth, which is something that can get muddled easily when too much instrumentation is involved.

Little Circles is a beautiful little number that I know many more will enjoy. I feel from here on out the best way to enjoy Corrella is to see them live

About Corrella

Quickly making a name for themselves with their sun-soaked reggae-inspired sound, Corrella are fast becoming a new favourite on the Aotearoa music scene. Their single Blue Eyed M?ori is the sleeper hit of 2023, and the band are set to continue that momentum with new single Lady Divine.

Named for the naval-base where the band met, Corrella’s first release, their self-titled EP was released in 2021, announcing their arrival on the reggae-music scene. They wasted no time following up with a series on singles through 2022, including the track Raumati, which was featured as part of the Waiata Anthems 2022 series.

Skankin', the first single from their album, announced their arrival to the wider music scene, making an impact on New Zealand radio. May saw the release of their debut full-length album, Road From 26. The album is a powerful, modern & outright vibe which takes the listener on a journey from Corrella’s past to present. With their signature feel-good roots-reggae, the album sees them incorporating funk, soul & pop-rock sounds throughout.

Shady Brain Farm - Album Review: ..Another Set Of Circumstances
26 Sep 2024 // by Kerry MB
Shady Brain Farm hail from North-West Auckland — specifically Kumeu, Waimauku, and Muriwai Beach — and has been making music together since 1997. The band, Ben Furniss lead vocals, guitar, and keyboards, Paul Taylor drums and backing vocals, and Chris Vaughan on bass and backing vocals are certainly no strangers to musical diversity and are back with a new album, ...

Hadees Drudge is quite an anomaly in Wellington’s metal scene. Forgoing a second guitarist, they proudly rock one guitar in a genre where that’s almost unheard of.

PARK RD - Album Review The Novel
23 May 2024 // by Kerry MB
It’s easy to see why Auckland five-piece, PARK RD is making some noise, figuratively and literally with their debut album, The Novel. Heavy on the indie, but far from light with solid guitar riffs and pop and funk sensibilities, PARK RD are a great example of solid musicianship.
