The Knids - Album Review: Monochrome

18 Mar 2024 // A review by Deprivacy

Monochrome is the fourth album by Tauranga 3-piece The Knids. The Knids consists of, Michael Baxter, Corinne Rutherford, and Chris Shennen, three musicians with a heap of talent, which you can hear throughout this Album. A ten-track album, Monochrome, starts with an upbeat classic rock/punk track called Big In Spain, giving a good example of the sound and tempo to expect at different areas throughout the album.

The album, consists of a range of different styles, taking you on a roller coaster of sound, from a classic 70’s Punk feel, (Big In Spain, Ode To Sleep, The Princess & The Punk and Day of the Dead) , through to songs that blend classic rock, with a feel of a 70’s electronic sound (Mister Average, Lucky Day, Monochrome, Parade and Direct Hit!) , to which, complement each other seamlessly, mixed with great vocals, sound quality, and production, the result is great listening!

The vocals shine through , and tell a story in each track, which when upon listening to the lyrics, bring a smile to your face , and soon become relative to the listener, while the music , takes you on a journey from start to finish, with the finishing song being Lennon in my Soup, a song to wind you down, and the perfect finish to a great album.

To me, this album has a perfect Kiwiana take on a 70's Punk Rock feel, with a great mix of Rock, and electronic blended songs, it’s exciting, it’s motivating, and it sits comfortably in the background anywhere. A personal favourite of mine is the difference in each song on the album, with each song being unique in its own way, but still keeping that fundamental sound of The Knids, the result: A great album!

Each track is catchy and exciting, telling a tale in well-written lyrics with well delivered vocals and wrapped in a very unique sound that you can easily get hooked on. The music itself is punchy, well tracked, and easy to get into the groove of, all fundamental to a great album.

Personally, this is an album I recommend, and I will be playing it many times over in my household. I recommend you give it a spin - It will definitely surprise you!

About The Knids

The Knids are Michael Baxter, Corinne Rutherford and Chris Shennen. Loosely classifying themselves as alternative indie-pop rockers, there may be something else in their mix which will surprise you. Sit back. Have a listen, and prepare yourselves for a new experience.
