Breathingunderwater

Bio

Breathingunderwater was formed in 1998 in Auckland by Dean Young, purely as a home studio project. Setting out to make "the biggest noise possible", writing began on songs which would form the backbone of the band's first EP.

The 'Aquatic Ceremony' EP was released on MP3.com the following year with the band's future direction evident over the span of the EP's 6 tracks. From the punchy opener 'New Mistake' to the dark atmospherics of 'Infallibility', the band showed off a dynamic blend of melody and epic production that were to become hallmarks of the breathingunderwater sound.

Along with developing Breathingunderwater, Dean joined seminal Goth Rock band The Altar as a guitarist, remaining in the band until it's break-up in 2001.

In 2000, 'Horizonchrist', Breathingunderwater's critically acclaimed debut album was released on MP3.com and further blurred the lines between electronia and rock. The album showcased some of the band's most expansive and intricate songwriting to date, coupled with a more dense, layered production. The album was an online favourite at MP3.com, with the single 'A Brand New Hurt' hitting the top of the Goth Rock charts and spawning the remix EP 'A Dry Remorse' featuring contributions from the internet's most popular underground electronica artists including Terran 7, Edgmere and the Mercy Cage.

Breathingunderwater continued producing music through 2000-2001 with the 'Prayers to Broken Stones' EP, featuring a handful of songs written around the time of the 'Horizonchrist' sessions that were not deemed suitable for that album. The EP also featured 3 remixes of tracks from 'Horizonchrist'.

In November of 2001 Breathingunderwater picked up two awards for 'Horizonchrist' at the annual Bay of Plenty Music Awards, for 'Best Album' and 'Best Production'. In 2001, Dean began a fruitful remix collaboration with fellow NZ act the Mercy Cage, providing numerous remixes for the band that have been featured on several EP's and b-sides.

The majority of 2002 was spent in the studio recording the follow up to 'Horizonchrist', however, plans to relocate overseas delayed the finishing up of the 11 tracks. 5 of those songs are due to be released in the near future. Over 2002-2003 Dean was drafted in to playing the live guitar for the Mercy Cage filling several dates with the band in support of the 'Rust A Fiction' album.

Since the relocation to the UK Dean Young has been hard at work providing remixes under the Breathingunderwater moniker for the new album from longtime friends, the Mercy Cage - 'Scree: Transmissions'.

Once the studio is fully up and running, writing will commence on new Breathingunderwater music.
