Marla's unique dark and melodic style has attracted the intrigue of punters, fellow musicians and friends over the last couple of years.
In this she has been stretching her wings on the Christchurch music scene, and has commanded respect with her intense yet delicate vocal delivery and intricate peices of guitar work.
She captivates audiences with her hauntingly evocative originality, attracting well-deserved comparisons with the likes of Tori Amos and PJ Harvey; and heres why:
A prolific song writer of many influnces since 17, Marla's set never fails to be fresh and interesting. She already has over 40 songs to her name, and doesn't plan on stopping any time soon. The style of music is distinctly contemporary Folk with Jazz infusions, yet has its own indescribable genre. Beautifully crafted, deeply reflective songs break away from the norm capturing listeners in a 'deja vu space between waking and dreaming..'
Key performances to date have included The Christchurch Folk Music Club, The Dux de Lux, The Wunderbar, The Media Club, Micky Finn's and the Waipara Wine and Food Festival in March 2004.
Her songs have enjoyed live performances from The Media Club being broadcasted on Plains FM and she has performed alonside such respected musicians/writers as James Wilkinson, Izzy Miller Bell, Trillion and Andy Thompson .
Currently Marla is in the midst of recording her debut EP with the input of other Christchurch musicians and will venture out of town with her music in the near future.
"I'd like to have people be touched by and remember my music, to invoke something within those that come and listen.."
Be sure to catch her soon.
"Most singer-songwriters falter in their musicianship and vice-versa. Not Marla Jean, she is the consummate writer and performer. Songs like Marla's keep Folk Music a living tradition." - Russell Gillies, President Christchurch Folk Music Club & Family Festival of Music.
