Bringing backpacks full of roadsongs, The Bittersweet deliver a haymaker of song with every show. Footstomp country, heartbreak folk and beatboom melodies, all tumble and twist out of these two young ramblers.
McGrath provides junkshop guitar with a gravel flecked voice that ties up nice and sweet with Hadassah’s angel smooth, jazz den harmonies and both serve the songs which seem to come fully formed, filled to bursting with both the romance and tragedy of life.
Having played a little and a lot, here, there and everywhere and bored with the record stores and coffee machines of their home town of Christchurch, the two sweet hearts hit the road, where they’ve been ever since, playin’ country to country, town to town, from street corners to theatres, lounge rooms to stages, if there’s people they’ll play for ‘em, sending songs of life, the joys, the kicks, the darkness towards both the head and the heart for one and for all.
Grown on the scriptures; Springsteen's ‘Nebraska’, the thumping heart of Hooker and Son House, the wit and wisdom of Townes van Zandt and freewheelin’ Dylan, the saddened soul of the Shangrila’s, the gospel according to Cash, a little shit kicked from a Steve Earle boot and the tales of Kerouac, Salinger and Vonnegut too, The Bittersweet come to play, night after night, street after street, they’re serious but know when to grin as often as cry.
It's obvious in sound and in show, they play like they mean it, like its all they know how to do.
