Canvas was formed in 1999, and performed for the last time on 27 July 2002.
A product of the flourishing Christchurch scene that has thrown up national acts like The Feelers and Zed, Canvas were similar pop wonders. Armed with simple, catchy power pop songs and an array of radio-friendly hooks, lines and singers, Canvas took the listener by the hand, gently coaxing them into a world of blissful melodies, tender tonics, and shaken up emotions.
After countless appearances and placings at band competitions in Christchurch, Canvas felt they had outgrown their hometown, electing to see what the capital had to offer. It was there they met bassist Daniel Fulton, beginning an alliance that saw the band develop into the spring-in-the-step three piece that has supported some of this countries biggest powerpop names - Zed, Tadpole, Fur Patrol, Weta, Eye TV, Rubicon, Pacifier and Betchadupa.
Keen to explore and develop their own pop leanings, Canvas have applied a bit of rock to their formula to output a sound that heralds, as Mike describes it, "real good simple songs with great melodies. Lot’s of energy. Really catchy. Really radio-friendly."
Canvas' single Airtight was included on the NZ On Air Indie Hit Disc 12 and another single Tina was included on the Indie Hit Disc 15 nation-wide. Canvas released their debut EP Open Up in 2000 and sold 350 copies in the first three months of release.
In October 2000, Canvas spent 4 weeks as the #1 band on the mp3.net.nz charts.
Ricky now performs with The Accelerants and Mike now performs with Autozamm.
Band Members:
