1814 are a 7-piece reggae band whose members live in the hill’s around the beautiful Whangaroa Harbour and near by town of Kerikeri, Northland.
Patu Colbert guitar/vocals formed the band with son’s, Shaun on drums and Jimmy on bass in 2004 while playing in a small church in Kaeo. “We were supporting community events around Northland which gave us the opportunity to play our own material and it sort of started from there".
The line up now includes Darren Katene lead vocal, Katherine Te Haara–Atama vocals, Reuben Heger sax, Erana Jones keys and Tony Harrison on sound.
The name 1814 was taken from the year the Gospel arrived at Oihi, in the Bay Of Islands. Missionary Samuel Marsden, held the first sermon there on Christmas Day, 1814. This is the inspiration behind delivering a message of peace, love and unity to all people through out the land.
1814 have had the privilege of playing on Coast TV with Ardijah, as well as sharing the bill with some of the countries top acts, Katchafire, House of Shem, 3 Houses Down, Cornerstone Roots, Unity Pacific, Ruia Aperahama, Whirimako Black, Che Fu and Moana and the Tribe to name a few.
The Sound Splash Reggae Festival in Raglan, One Drop Reggae Festival at Ngunguru, Nga Puhi Festival, Waitangi, AUT, Maori in the City, Te Mataariki and Mai FM Summer Concerts are some of the festivals the band has supported, helping to raise the 1814 profile.
