Jet Jaguar

Bio

Jet Jaguar is Michael Upton. Born and raised in Wellington, Michael has been making music since 1991, when he was inspired by a friend's Mum's MIDI set-up! Paging Dr Freud!

Jet Jaguar arrives from the sampledelic world of Funk, Hip-Hop and Dub. Genres that have always been reflexive: borrowing riffs, drum patterns and vocals from the past in order to funk them up, to create, and move forward. Upton utilises a similar approach, lacing tracks with old school samples, odd radio samples and nano-blips from who knows where. Low-end bass theory informs the sub-structure of the Jet Jaguar sound.

Inspired by 70's dub producers and hip-hop he sees no point in emulating them, instead borrowing aspects of the dubspace programme to pan, echo and stretch space and time.

Contrary to his musical precision Mr Upton is the owner of messiest studio in the world. Mixing desk balanced upon a derelict pile of vinyl, speakers are plonked randomly on top of old PC hardware while an array of cables and wires race to the finishing line of the world's biggest knot contest.

Jet Jaguar is a musical hero in Wellington. He is involved the band Dub Connection. His remix of their track All the Goodness was voted Best Unreleased Tune of 2000 by the bNet Awards as well as #2 on Radio Active's song of the year 2000 chart. Jet Jaguar is currently exploring dub at the cellular level, while searching for leftfield poets for some hip-hop be-bop reconfiguration.

Michael also works under Patio.

Third Jet Jaguar album hits stores
Posted: Tue Dec 16, 2003 7:54 am
Highly regarded New Zealand electronic label Involve Records have announced the release of Jet Jaguar's 3rd album, 'Jet Jaguar is Love'. This is a limited edition of approximately 400 CDs.

Jet Jaguar's last album, 'Think About It Later' was nominated in the bNet Awards this year for Best Electronic Release, and if there is any justice 'Jet Jaguar is Love' will do the same.

The album is a collection of the quieter side of Jet Jaguar's music, packed with tiny details and all wrapped up in warm waves of bass. It's perfect for a later Summer evening. It's still not free from the head nodding beats that have been present on other releases: Jet Jaguar was even approached with the unusual request of allowing one of the tracks on here to be used as the backing track for a commercial R&B group.

The album comes in a beautiful card sleeve with inlay. (bah, that shouldn't go there)

Tracks on this album have been previously released on compilations of electronic music in New Zealand, Australia and the USA.

Director Glen Atkins created a video for the track 'Now Serving' (featuring cuts by DJ Vee), which was 2nd runner up in the 2001 Handle The Jandle competition. Glen also took the prize for Best Editing.

Jet Jaguar has performed at gigs with Prefuse 73 (USA), Salmonella Dub, Nomad, 50Hz, Pitch Black, Aspen, Lava Lava, King Kapisi and is scheduled to play support for Monolake (Germany) in Auckland next week. He is a member of the Dub Connection, which features members of The Black Seeds and Fat Freddy's Drop. His remixes of Dub Connection and The Black Seeds spent lots of time on the indie charts and both received bNet nominations.
