Skank Attack were a Wellington three piece who were highly active in the mid to late 1980′s. They became well known for their energetic and visually strong live performances, a collaborative attitude and a series of great posters designs.
Like so many bands of the era, Skank Attack gained huge inspiration from the ‘make your own fun’ ethos of the post punk era and embraced the philosophy with relentless enthusiasm, while consciously avoiding some of the limiting clichés of the times.
The group toured regularly and struck up a camaraderie with bands in other cities, particularly Auckland groups like Fish for Life, The Warners and Cicada. Auckland’s BFM were particularly supportive in airing their demos whenever they arrived in town.
The group released a self titled E.P under their own ‘Skank Records’ moniker and a compilation of tracks by Wellington bands entitled ‘Where The Wind Blows’, both of which received enthusiastic reviews.
By 1988 the group had evolved into a tight outfit and the highlight of their live performances came when promoter Doug Hood booked them to play support for Hunters and Collectors at Wellington’s Union Hall.
Before going their separate ways, the group determined to record an album and in 1988 a number of sessions took place at ‘Writhe Studios’. Producer Nick Roughan (whose long and impressive CV includes playing and producing with Skeptics, Dimmer and The Adults) recorded the original sessions with engineering help from Brent McLachlan of Bailterspace.
Former members of the Skank Attack have recently unearthed the multitrack tapes from their last recording session and have been working with Roughan to mix the best songs for release in 2012.
The first single ‘Down Around Our Ears’ was released on 1.2.12.
It was featured on it’s release date on Silke Hartung’s respected ‘Freak the sheep’ NZ music show on Auckland’s BFM. Silke interviewed former Skank guitarist/vocalist Phil Simpson about the bands plans to release further material later this year.
