Cleve Cameron

Bio

In a time before the Primal-Digital album…

Cleve Cameron was the SpungoChief – pioneering new forms of media as a founding member of the art group Spungo. They brought into the world: a roving radio station, an alternative mail system, a publication of blueprints for the future called ‘The Guz’ and became notorious for daring public happenings in banks, supermarkets and galleries – predating flash-mobs, and pop-up shops. Spungo is now studied at universities, and many of the artefacts of the period are now found in the national archives and art collections throughout New Zealand.

In another dimension…

Cleve is the creator of Beop ‘the band from another dimension’. Beop first appeared in the novel of the same name penned by Cleve, in 2015 Beop first appeared live through a hi-tech portal (created with Perceptual-Engineering). Beop brought with them new fashions, new dance moves, new words, technologies and points of view; The Zozz, Uncle Doog and Sister Dep perform their up-vibed electronic songs on instruments unseen in this dimension – The Phrove, with its levitating pads of light, the Rhythmo-Pole 27T, and the infamous Hairy-Tailed Jippet. Beop’s songs are composed in a collaboration between Cleve, Iain Gordon and Toby Laing (Fat Freddy’s Drop); and although officially still unreleased, Beop have already had a recording awarded at the John Lennon Songwriters Contest in New York.

In the Primal-Digital age…

Cleve has written and produced an album packed with stadium-sized chants, pounding electro-punk bass lines and guitar hooks. Cleve first fined-tuned the songs in the streets, playing in the Urgent-Folk style, in cities from Sydney to Delhi to Auckland, before going to record them over 10 days at Roundhead Studios with his band Kieran Scott, Willa O’Neill and Fraser Hunter. In the studio, guest players and vocalists joined in: members of the Auckland Philharmonic Orchestra, Lawrence Arabia, Ed Costelow, and tabla player, Mandeep Singh. The album was first made available to the media and public exclusively in Mandeep’s taxi in Auckland, New Zealand.
