With the grit and honesty of a cold, damp flat and the invincible energy of a full day street party, the Albion Place flavour has become the soundtrack to the world-renowned Otago student lifestyle.
Albion Place began as the after-school hobby of four mates, playing shows at school assemblies or busking on the street after which they are named. When the band went into the studio in 2014, their expectations were minimal: have some CDs to give out to friends and family and sell a couple at the few shows they were playing. Six months after their debut EP Here We Go was released, these expectations had not been far exceeded. However in 2015 (and for reasons still unknown) their single I Will Not Forget exploded into the online stratosphere, bringing with it new fans from all over the world.
Spurred on by this unexpected success, in 2016 Albion Place brought in Sydney based artist/producer Lyall Moloney to help record their follow up self-titled EP. At the beginning of 2017, with two releases under their belt and having played a hurricane of shows in their hometown Dunedin, the band decided it was time to let the cat out of the bag. They jumped in a van and embarked on their first national tour, playing shows in Queenstown, Wanaka, Wellington, Tauranga, Auckland and Waihi Beach. The band are now at the forefront of a wave of new Dunedin bands that includes GROMz, The Shambles, Soaked Oats and more, who have been making an impact on a scale perhaps not seen since the legendary Dunedin Sound of the early 80s. Since the tour, the foursome have been honing their craft and writing new material for an album to be released later in 2017 whilst playing a splattering of sold out shows in Dunedin and Christchurch. Having raked up a total of almost 1 million plays on Spotify, there is an eager anticipation around NZ and beyond as to what the next offering may be. The first single Easier came out in May and the band are set to take their fresh, exciting new sound on tour this coming Winter.
