Trees for Ruru

Bio

Trees for Ruru is the project of musician and artist Leah Rangi. Originally playing music as a solo artist under the name 'one lone lily', for a long time her bedroom walls were exclusively privy to her sonic creations. When moving from her hometown of Dunedin to Wellington, and with a newfound sense of confidence, the project became 'Trees for Ruru', with the addition of Taihakoa Cameron on drums. A few years later Leah continued to Melbourne where Trees for Ruru performed at many beloved venues and played at a showcase for LISTEN. All the while continuing to hone her craft, write and produce bedroom recordings.

Now located in The Netherlands, the project has developed a distinct shoegazey / jangley sound which incorporates sparkly harmonies and vintage instruments like the omnichord, to accompany her thoughtful lyrics. Writing from her unique perspective as a M?ori woman from the deep south, her songs range from describing maintaining mental health through retreats in Aotearoa's nature, disconnecting from toxic people and the ruse of colonisation.

Trees for Ruru released the single Hauora of the Spotless Mind (Goodnight Birds) on February 2nd 2020, with more promised in the coming months.
