Dunedin's contribution to NZ music remains entrenched with the so-called "Dunedin Sound" of the 80s, where a whole wave of Velvet Underground-influenced quirky jangle guitar pop bands had an impact on the country and the world, under the banner of the Flying Nun label. Nowadays, Flying Nun is located in Auckland, and the Dunedin music scene is less high-profile. Amongst this new terrain is a group of young punk bands like Ritalin, Indifference and Negative Nancy, trying to build a new musical legacy for Dunedin.

Formed in August 2001, Negative Nancy began in the tradition of most bands by playing parties, but stress they are a 'real' band now, based on the qualification that they have received hate mail from a disgruntled former covers band frontman who proclaimed the band, "The Shittiest Band in Dunedin".

Negative Nancy play what they describe as, "simple hardcore", despite quoting influences as diverse as Stretch Arm Strong and Talking Heads. As the band themselves put it, "[we are] dumbing it down for all the bag ladies, binniess and bogans that seem to follow us (Helen). We have been called metal by a shades-wearing Dunedin groupie, but we are fighting the drop-D demons."
